Newbie question

Asked by: jeromeMtlQcCa

Hi experts,

I need to add 3 stations on a network. I now have a really cheap Soho hub but it's not a 10/100.

My question is simply will it slow down the whole network if I use this hub?

Thanks

It mostly depends on what kind of traffic those stations will output. For 3 stations, running LAN games it's fine. However, if you are running applications with lots of broadcasts or anything that generates lots of heavy traffic, you might want to invest in a small 10/100 switch which are very cheap nowadays.

g'luck!

If the remainder of the network is composed of switches, then no it will not hurt that much, as it will create a seperate broadcast domain, and would not affect the switches. I wouldventure to say that those three stations are going to be a tad slower than those on a switch, as the packets will have to be broadcasted to find the destination, rather than a switch learning routes to each port.

I would do what jleon said and invest in a switch, can pick them up for around $30, or less even if you go the ebay route.

If you have 3 computers connected via a 10Mbit Soho hub, they will communicate at 10mbit. If this 10Mbit Soho hub is plugged into a network that uses a SWITCH or ROUTER, the 3 computers will communicate with the rest of the network and themselves at 10Mbit, while the rest of the network communicates with itself at 100Mbit (assuming you have a 10/100 Switch, or a 10/100 Router).

If, however, the network is connected via, say, a 100Mbit hub, connecting your Soho hub to it will not actually connect your 3 computers to it. They won't be able to see any of the computers on the network and vice versa.

To sum up:

3 Computers --10Mbit--> (Soho Hub) --10Mbit--> (switched network at 100Mbit) <--100mbit--network computers  [EVERY THING WORKS]

3 Computers --10Mbit--> (Soho Hub) --10Mbit--> (non-switched network at 100Mbit) <--100mbit--network computers [DOESN'T WORK]

3 Computers --10Mbit--> (Soho Hub) --10Mbit--> (non-switched network at 10Mbit) <--10mbit--network computers [EVERYTHING WORKS AT 10Mbit]

Wow. that was probably very confusing. I need visio :). Please, ask questions if you need further clarification, and I will answer them.
