Asked by: Morriz

Hi!
I have an question about Public and Private ip adresses.
I have a Lan With 20 computers they all have private ip adresses and they go trouh a firewall (ip cop) and a Server who holds GPO and is a domain controller.
Now all clients have privates ip adress but one public ip adress to internet, they share internet connection. But some times the clients need to connect to a server that only accepts 1 ip adress, how do i configure sow it´s look like it comes from diffrent ip adresses istead off only one? is this possible on a LAN or tho the clients need to have diffrent ip adress to connect to this server?

Hello Morriz,

If what you have is a server that only lets you to connect from one IP at the same time and you are having trouble because all the Pcs on your LAN have the same public IP and then they can't connect simultaneosly to this server, I'm sorry to tell you that you can't do nothing at all. You have only one internet (public) IP and thats all. The fact for the server is that there is only one machine.

On the other hand I don't know which kind of server allows only one connection for IP but it's pretty sure that if you talk to the admin of the server you should get the permission to log to the server with more than one IP. That's the way it's done on the IRC servers for example, because it is allowed only one conection per IP and server.

Maybe you can explain me more about the server and I can help you more.

Waiting your feedback.

You will have to get a pool (instead of 1 address and doing the NAT stuff) of WAN IP addresses from your ISP. Notice this might increase your internet line subscription cost.

Hi!
Thanks for a fast response...
Sow if i want to connect to an IRC server with more then one client thats behind a private adress and it´s allow only one public adress i have
to contact the admin of that server?

by: SoMoSPosted on 2003-09-09 at 06:59:14ID: 9320417

That's the way I've done everytime that i found this problem. On a IRC server you usually can log twice with one IP (one clone allowed) but this is up to the IRC Admin.

Contacting him is the best answer that I can give you (besides going into maybe some ilegal stuff like spoffing the IPs and things like this).

Waiting your feedback.

Can you please explain to me how it works with the IRC servers and how they do for accepting more then one connection from a ex private adress.
I dont follow... i still have 1 public adress, how do they configure sow that i can connect from various private adress connect to the server buy just using i public adress than only allow one adress. Do i have to configure something to or just they have to?

by: SoMoSPosted on 2003-09-09 at 07:12:06ID: 9320528

Hi Morriz,

Sorry, maybe I've done a muddle with this. You can't do anything except asking to the IRC Admin to allow 'n' connections to his server from your public IP because you have a shared internet connection. He will then configure the IRC server to allow this. It's just a rule of the IRC server.

Feel free to askme again if still you don't catch it.

See you.

Ok!
But if i have more static ip adress deliver by ISP can i the assign this ip adress to the LAN some how sow that i can make my question possible?
Sorry about all the repeted question...

by: SoMoSPosted on 2003-09-09 at 09:00:53ID: 9321587

Yes, there is a way to put more than one IP to a NIC. But take in mind that public IPs cost money. If you want to fix the problem like this just ask me and then I will show you the way to set up the thing.

Also you will get only one user for each IP. I donno if it's the best solution possible but this is up to you, of course.

See you.

Yes. But it is not practical to assign a WAN to a LAN ip. Normally there will be a pool of ip which your router/firewall can use if a request for connection is made, once the session terminates, the IP will be returned to the pool.

by: davetehPosted on 2003-09-09 at 19:40:47ID: 9325716

From your post, it should be the firewall which will be doing to assigning of public address. Can let us know the brand and model of your firewall?

by: Blood_LinePosted on 2003-09-09 at 22:15:23ID: 9326298

You may want to look into using an IRC proxy the applications are out there and would allow you to use differant proxies for differant machines. it would allow your machines to technicaly come from differant addresses because they would be routed through the proxies. and there are many free programs and free proxies out there if you look for them. it's a solution in any case.

Herro Morriz, different timezones so sorry for the delay,

as daveteh said, it is the firewall that must assign the IPs (it is the onlt machi on you LAN that manages public adress isn't it?). So please, give us the model of the firewall to look how to manage this. There is one different way for each f*·% firewall on the market (when they can do this, not all firewalls can manage this, of course).

See you soon.

Hi again!
How about the comment from Blood_Line to use proxy? is that something thats going to work?

by: SoMoSPosted on 2003-09-10 at 07:13:52ID: 9329110

Yeah, maybe this work, but your users are going to be clones I think. When a IRC server sees two users with the same IP it thinks that there are clones and the number of clones use to be limited to 2. You can try if you want.

This is a good IRC proxy:

Linux - http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/519980/ircproxy.html

Windows - http://www.antifirewall.com/

Tell me how they work with you. Maybe I can help you further.

Waiting your feedback.
