The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Why would Windows 95 and Mac OS X display different IP addresses for the same connection?

Asked by Perplexed1 in Miscellaneous Networking, Appletalk, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

I run Windows 95 at work.  I cannot change this, because of the somewhat peculiar needs of my employer.  The machine's primary function is to control an IDN network running DOS-based software that barely tolerates Windows 95.

But my employer also wants cable modem access.  Road Runner is our ISP and they adamantly (and wisely) refuse to support 95 to any degree.

The Windows 95 machine (pretty much an out-of-the-box Dell Optiplex GX110) has developed (apparently spontaneously) an inability to browse the internet with either Netscape 7.0 or IE 5.5.  However, it can get email, use PCAnywhere, and get upddates from Symantec.  When I use winipcfg to renew and release IP Addresses, I consistently get the same IP, Gateway and Subnet Mask each time I renew.

However when I plug my PowerBook into the cable modem (there's no hub, and only one IP address has been purchased), the IP, Gateway and Subnet addresses are all different from what the Windows machine tells me.  Again, though, each time I release-and-renew, I get the same values as the last time I did it on the Mac.

How can this be?  At home, when I have physically disconnected a Windows machine and plugged my Mac in, the Mac assumed the IP address the Windows machine previously used.  And when I have plugged them both in after purchasing additional IP addresses, they have at least shared the same subnet and gateway.

Any help you could give would be fabulous. :)
