Browse All TopicsHi, I have a strange problem that I have not been able to find the anwser to!
To start with I have a small network of five computer in my office that all worked fine. I am hooked up to the internet with sattalite service.
Some one tried to hook up their lap to to my network and when it diden't work he disconected one of my clients to try to get it working one-on-one with the lap top.
Well he never got it working but did succeed in messing up the client!
When ever I turn on that client the internet shuts down. The rest of the network works just fine between my computers here in the office, it's just the internet. The strange thing is all I have to do to restore the internet is unplug the computer and wal-lah, all the others work fine.
I first tried changing my TCP/IP settings to automaticly get the IP and that helped.... for about ten min. then it went down again. Then I changed it to a static IP that I first made sure wasn't on any of the other clients. Same thing. It will run for about ten min just fine and then.. kaput. Down again. I am not getting any error messages like "IP conflict" or any thing of that sort. It just says "DNS Lookup error" on my browser and the internet stops working.
I am running XP Home on both systems.
This has been realy frustrating, I hope someone can help me!
Thanks a lot, Jacob Bushnell

Thanks guys, but these are all about how to set up ICS. I understand all that and have been to most of those places allready. :) I have followed their tutorials for the last three days and still nothing.
The 500 points are there for a reason (no offence I hope!) =) I need some more indepth information.
Thanks

Are you using ICS on one of the workstations, or do you have a router? I'm going to assume you are using ICS because of the question title.
If using satellite service, you might need to change the MTU on the ICS machine, same as for pppoe:
http://support.microsoft.c
If you set your ICS host MTU low to something like 576, I think you'll find a dramatic improvement in performance.
You can use DrTcp to set the MTU for you:

Here you are, sorry it took me so long. I had to plug it in which of course fried the internet before I got this sent to you.

I changed it again to automaticly get an IP address. I diden't seem to make a diff either way
Can you ping the gateway - 192.168.0.1?
C:\>ping 192.168.0.1 -t
Try it again after you loose connectivity to the Internet
If you can still ping the host, try pinging something outside:
C:\>ping 198.6.1.2 <-- Internet cache name server
If you can ping that, but can't get anything in the browser, at least we can narrow down the possibilities..
Dimante, I am still kicking my self for having it turned off! It is just a workstation and doesn't have any data on it any way. I am not exactly sure what he did but I think he tried to run the "new connection wizzerd" a coulple of times on both his laptop and my client. Yeah I now I shoulden't have let him but hey, I figured if he messed any thing up I could fix it, right? WRONG WRONG WRONG!!! Hey I am learning somthing any way :)
Hi jake,
Irmoore is very correct on.. you should not have to setup ICS if you have a router. You said when you plug in the problem computer the internet crashes...did it cause the router busy out?
Have you properly patch all your XP Home with microsoft patches? It sure sound like a MSBlast warm trail!!
Tbird008
<If you are using a router, you should not need ICS at all...
Does this ICS "client" have two network cards in it, or does it connect directly to the Satellite link?
Perhaps I am not using wy words right.. The sattalite modem hooks up to my "host/client machine" using USB port. All five computers hook up to a Hub/Router.
I hope this clears it up! As you can see I am not really computer sabe when it comes to terms. By the way, in my situation what should I call the machine that controlls the network? It is a server, right?
Jake,
Got to run, but I'll check back later today....Hopefully Irmoore is still around to help you!!
An adivse after you have solve this problem..you should get a broadband router to free up that workstation and will improve you connection speed, since you have more than 4 PC's already. The router runs pretty cheap now a day with firewall on it. Good luck, check back with you later!!

>but after it crashed (which usally take about five min) I could only get a succsessful ping form the DNS and nothing from the external ping.
OK, I'm confused again (not hard, really)
If you can still ping 198.6.1.2 (this is a REAL, external DNS server) even after the "crash", then we have narrowed down the issues.
Did you read the links about the MTU size? This really will have a dramatic impact on how your system works, especially over the satellite.
Pings are by default only 32 bytes, much smaller than the 1500 byte default MTU on the systems...
If the tiny pings still work, but browsing does not, then I firmly believe this to be the culprit..
Hey I'm back now. Irmoore, I did check out those links but they didn't seem to be my problem.
But hey - I decided to chek it out any way. It seem to be just fine using the test in that link you gave me. I pinged it with >ping -f -l MTU_1490 192.168.0.1
That went through just fine so I tried >ping -f -l MTU_9999 192.168.0.1
That went just fine so I tried going lower >ping -f -l MTU_0500 192.168.0.1
Well they all went fine.. Mabye I am doing somthing wrong?
Any way I tried lowering it down a littel any way and then instead of waiting 10 min to crash it did it in about 2 min. Hmm
Strange to me. I hope it makes sense to you! :)
Hi all, I'm back now.
I can ping 198.6.1.2 just fine by itself but I can't use >ping -f -l MTU_packetsize 198.6.1.2
I am typing it corretly, right?
Here is what I am getting:

Thank you all very much!
After updating my virus scan I foun the NACHI.A worm and removed it. Now every thing works great!
I am not sure how to divide this as two of you told me to update my virus scan.
Imoore also stuck in there the longest with me and was extreamly helpfull.
I will give Irmoore half and Tbird00 and Daveteh each a quarter. I hope this is ok with you all! Thanks again for all your help!

Dear Jacob,
The points are as good as it can be. I am glad you finally solve the problem. I've been so busy with my baby girl yesterday and as of today was a hell day at work. First the remote office went down than one of the orcale database went down in the main office too. I have had it recovered by tomorrow 6:00am, else the broadcasting will be interrupted. As you can see I am here to answer you..I've already safe myself, I did peek in to the question and see if you get any updated tactic. Any how I've learn some techinics and advice everytime time going through questions and answers here in EE. It may not help your situation but alot of times they are good info to aquire. Good luck with your network and you might be helping us in the future!!
P.S. Stay on top of Updates and do read alittle about each updates coz you don't want to over patch your system : ). Virus is very important now a day be on top of it.
Best Regards,
Richard
