I'm trying to connect my two computers together for file sharing, etc. I bought the crossover cable yesterday and thought I could just plug it in between the two and be able to see each other, but that didn't happen. I tried to mess with the IP addresses but that didn't help either. I don't know what to do. I've spent the last three days and nights trying to figure this out, but I'm still where I was at the beginning. Does anybody know what proper steps I need to do. All I want to do is just connect them with the crossover cable and share files. Both comps have Win XP Home. And where do I go to see the shared comp? Start->Run->\\name of comp?

1: Both computers should have unique names and be in the same workgroup.
RIght click on My COmputer in explorer, select Properties - name
2: Set one computer's ip address to 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.2
Set the other computer's ip address to 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1

Did you make sure the IP addresses were in the same range? Rather than wait for an answer here is how to do it assuming both machines are WINXP
Assign each machine an IP Address such as 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.3
Set the subnet mask on both machines to 255.255.255.0
Right click on my computer and put both machines in the same workgroup. For the purpose of this problem lets call your workgroup home.
After have followed these steps on your machines make sure you have a local machine administrator account on both machines with the same user name and password.
Log in with your matching Administrator account then right click on my computer on your 10.0.0.2 machine and select map network drive. Select the drive letter that you wish to set up as the mapped drive default should be your last drive letter z: under folder type \\10.0.0.3\c$ this will map the C drive of the other machine. Next time you douple click on my computer you should see the drive.

also, when i go to network connections to play with the settings, i have local area connection and 1394 connection. which do i mess with when configuring the tcp/ip address?
