Question

File lock / sharing violation when deleting/renaming a file

Asked by: SlyDog

Here's the issue:

Users are intermittantly getting a file lock/sharing violation error when trying to delete/rename a file on a network share. Admin level user can delete/change the name either on the server, or on a workstation through the share. The problem appears to be related only to tiff files.

Here's the setup:

This is a Windows 2000 domain. The server in question is a DC, and is the primary file storage server for the domain. The folder share that the user accesses, has the share permission set to Authenticated users, full access. The NTFS permission on the folder has Domain admins Full access, and RS (the users group) set to Full access.
The files are usually tiff format, and are large >300mb.

Check properties of this file can it be protected file.
You need to check permissions for this folder on the "sharing" tab, try if you have Everyone permissions. if it works then it is sharing problem and not something else.

see if the user can delete them from the command line

if a thumbnail preview is being generated in explorer, they may get locked out while that's going on

just go to http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml to download filemon.exe, let it monitor the suspect folder, then you can learn who was accessing files at there and doing what.

Sharing violations. Great customers love you to waste your time on these

Most common reason is files being accessed by more than 2 people

For some reason if the pc is on a different subnet can cause an error

Have you tried to install a new TIFF file, they may be corupt for some reason.

I dont have  real answer but a good suggest to set up a ftp server to the share. Easierly done with a DC ( I presume W2k), I sugest ISM ( Internet service manager)  IIS component with 2k.

btw, if you DONT want more than one client access those tiff files at SAME time, why dont you limit the share connections to ONLY 1?

Shivsa: the files in questioan are not protected. The share permission is set to "Authenticated Users". I may try "Everyone" as a test, but I don't think this is the issue.

stevenlewis: I'm checking on the Q docs you pointed out. We're on our Xmas break right now, so it won't be till January that I dig deeper into this.

zdkev: the files are only in use by one user, though the folder is accessed by three people.

chicagoan: I'll try the command line option. What's the reason for thinking this would work over Explorer etc? The users always use detailed view in explorer.

bbao: I'll check filemon.exe out and let all of you know what I find.

danhalen: the files are only being accessed by one person at a time. The workstations are indeed on a different subnet, but I don't think this is the issue.

To all: thanks for the suggestions, I'll be working on the problem in January. My gut feeling is a permissions issue seeing as the admin account can change the name at any time. If anyone is familiar with Win2k file/folder permission setup, throw out some comments please!

Thanks
SlyDog

Shep, i think you might just read some M$KB article regarding similar situation. in fact, any kind of anti-virus program may cause this problem if it has auto-scan agent running at background.

SlyDog, with filemon.exe you may find out who is accessing your files, just determine which procedures are there. do you have any anti-virus program installed?

cheers,
bbao

Yes we do run Norton Corp v8.1, but scanning of network drives is disabled on the clients. It may still prove to be the issue, I'm guessing based on the large file size involved (locking the file till it's done scanning maybe). The only thing that suggests it isn't antivirus, is the fact that an admin account can make the changes without problems. I'm currently waiting for the parties involved do have time for me to work on the problem.
I'm also knee deep in another server install, so please be patient for a few more days.

Dang users make my job so hard some times! ;-)

If explorer is accessing the file to preview it, that process may have the file open, the command line option would not.

SlyDog, sometimes we can not believe the 'disable' function of some programs, hehe :) in fact, it is just a word displayed on screen, who knows its host program is doing what at background?! ;) if it is possible, please post the installed programs and even some 3rd party agent/services/drivers if you think they are related.

ok, keep in contact.

Thanks for your help everyone. After a little playing around, and watching what the users were doing, it turns out that the problem seems to revolve around the thumbnail being built in Explorer while the user tried to rename the files. I've showed the user how to turn the thumbnail view off prior to renaming files.
My only wish would be for MS to get there head out of their ass, and have the error messages reflect what is really happening. Perhaps having it say "File is locked cause we're building the thumbnail". It sure would have saved me a lot of time.

Thanks
Dog
