Question

Getting rid of old network pop ups on start up.

Asked by: Sparks2

I am running Win ME.
Running Win ME
I was given a computer that used to be connected to a LAN and when it starts up a window appears with the following message.
"Windows Networking. The following error occured while loading the divice NW Server Error 6230: no workgroup has been specified. To specify one double click the Network Icon in Control Panel, and then click Identification tab.
I click OK and the next message that comes up is "Enter network password", "user name" tech 2; "Password." (unknown);" Doman" (unknown).

Is there a way to clear this stuff off. I currently have this connected to a router and on the internet and working fine. Another problem is when I set up e-mail it won't connect to the POP.  But that is another question which I will ask later if I can't handle it myself.

You can use Tweak UI by opening it to the Logon tab and selecting the "Logon" tab checking the box labeled "Log on automatically..." an set the Users name and password in the edit boxes provided.

How to Prevent a Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me Logon Prompt at Startup
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;152104

To prevent Windows from prompting you for a password at startup:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
On the Configuration tab, click Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box, and then click OK.
When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.
In Control Panel, double-click Passwords.
On the Change Passwords tab, click Change Windows Password, select any of the check boxes that you want, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you cancel the network logon dialog box when you start your computer, the Change Passwords tab may not be available. You must log on so that the Change Passwords tab is available.
In the Change Windows Password dialog box, type your current Windows password in the Old Password box. Leave the New Password and Confirm New Password boxes blank, click OK, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you have forgotten your old password, view the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
189126 Microsoft's Policy Regarding Missing or Invalid Passwords

On the User Profiles tab, verify that the All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings option is selected, and then click Close.
Click Start, point to Search (or Find), and then click For Files or Folders.
Type *.pwl in the Named box, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, and then press ENTER.
Right-click one of the .pwl files, click Rename, and then rename the file with an .old file name extension. Repeat this step for each .pwl file.

NOTE: If you do not rename the .pwl files, the passwords from those files may be detected by Windows and the Windows Logon request may continue to appear.
Shut down and then restart your computer.

Hi Sparks2,
Turn of the Win 9X log in Box

Click  Start >Settings >Control Pane >Network

1. Change the primary Network logon to “Windows Logon” (Don’t panic if its already set to this :0)
2. Now do a search on the hard drive with a .pwl extension (password files) Click Start >Search >For Files and Folders and search for *.pwl
3. DELETE ALL the .pwl files
4. Reboot the PC at the Logon Box just click OK (Don’t put in a username or password!!)

You should now be "logon Box Free"

If this didn’t work

1. Click Start >Run >type “sysedit” {enter}
2. Bring the “system.ini” file to the front and delete any entry under [Password Lists]

If it STILL won’t work

1. Click Start >Run > Type “regedit” {enter}
2. Navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\network\real mode net\
3. Right click “real mode net” and choose New >Binary Value, call the value AutoLogon set its value to 01 00 00 00

To CrazyOne and PeteL
I will want to have a log on later on, but for now I just want to get rid of the stuff that comes up currently. Do you comments suffice for this?

by: Sparks2Posted on 2004-01-09 at 23:03:24ID: 10085949

I did the following:
>Found all of the *.pwl and deleted them.

>Set configuration tab to Windows Login but “Remote Admin” comes up because on start up I had to hit cancel for the network login.

>Changed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ... AutoLogon to 01 00 00 00.

Still have the same messages as stated above.

Anything else I can do?

by: Sparks2Posted on 2004-01-09 at 23:15:26ID: 10085961

Also under sysedit>systom.ini I unchecked Passwords.

Try removing Client for microsoft login from the Network Neighbourhood Properties.  Right click on network neighbourhood and click properties and remove the client.  It should work like a dream then.

I didn't get a chance to remove Client for Microsoft - before I saw the message I went ahead and changed the win.com to old and reloaded windows. That was some help but still a lot of problems. I finally just put in another HDD and made it a master and the other the slave. I'm up and running fine now.

Respectively,  I'm not sure what is needed by "status" - The comments didn't handle the question and the question was handled by me using another means. Hope this is what you want.
