Question

Login to Server over VPN

Asked by: smartin0924

Im having problems with users being able to log into the Server.  I have a satelite site that connects through VPN using Sonicwall SOHO 3 box-box.  I am able to ping the Server which is my DC running AD.  I am running Wins on this box and DNS...I know thats a load, but moneys tight.  I am able to join the domain but when I try to log in using different users on a system it comes back and tells me the Domain is unavailable.  This is causing more problems than just a user logging in but I thought I would start here.  I have posted another question similar to this but I have not had a response from anyone yet.  If you have an idea of what I could look at i would really appreciate it.  Im getting desperate.  Thanks in Advance all.

In the advanced setting of your VPN/TCP-IP settings do you have it set to use the remote Gateway?

by: sirbountyPosted on 2004-01-23 at 13:49:23ID: 10188024

Check your settings this way.
Right-click your VPN and choose properties
From the Networking tab, double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Click Advanced button
On the general tab, you have a checkbox to use default gateway on remote network.
You also have seperate DNS and WINS tabs here to point to the appropriate server you're using....

Let me tell you how Im set up exactly and maybe that will help.  Im not so sure i know what you mean.

As stated before Im on a satelite site using Sonicwall Soho 3 connected through a VPN Tunnel to another SOHO 3 at our main site.  Im using the SOHO on the satelite site as a DHCP Server as well.  It has a SA that uses a shared secret for the correct hand shake between the two to make the tunnel.  The satelite SOHO is pointing to my WINS Server which is on the main site.
The main site has a static IP while the satelite is Dynamic. We are using a Cable connection at both ends.

192.168.15.x  DHCP/WINS/DNS
192.168.15.x  Gateway at Main site
192.168.16.x  Gateway at Satelite site running DHCP

Im sorry I do not follow exactly what you have said.  It is pointing to the Main Gateway.

The fact that you are able to ping the server at the main site from the remote site indicates that you have successfully established a vpn tunnel.
When you say: "I am able to join the domain but when I try to log in using different users on a system it comes back and tells me the Domain is unavailable" do you mean that you are using a win2k/XP computer to join the main site's domain?

smartin0924,

Are the clients at the satellite location being issued WINS and DNS configurations to match the IP address of the controller at the main site? If the Sonicwall can't issue WINS in the DHCP settings to the clients you will need to abandon DHCP there and manually enter NIC settings to include WINS from the main site.
Also, ensure that NetBios over TCP is enabled in the NIC settings.

Ping is working because DNS is configured properly, but NET USE, which essentially what you are doing with connecting to resources requires NetBios to be properly configured. This would most likely explain your batch job failures as well.

Give this a shot and see where it leaves us.

smartin0924,

Did you get sorted here? Do you still require some assistance?

by: smartin0924Posted on 2004-02-12 at 05:04:47ID: 10341885

KingHollis,

Im still trying to figure out why some computers work and others do not.  My desktops work great.  My laptops on the other hand will not receive the batch files.  I did attempt to configure my routers to handle DHCP over VPN.  That didnt go well.  I am having to wait until I can get to my satelite sites again to try the whole thing over.  I will keep you posted on what happens.  Thanks.

by: smartin0924Posted on 2004-02-12 at 05:06:30ID: 10341900

SectionOne,

That is correct.  I am running W2K Server and my desktops and laptops are all XP Professional.

>>My desktops work great.  My laptops on the other hand will not receive the batch files

Are these machines at the satellite location?

>> I did attempt to configure my routers to handle DHCP over VPN.

I think you should abandon having your SOHO box issue addressed. I think you should either let the remote site be staticly assigned, or put another DC at the satellite location.

What's the connetion between the two SOHO boxes? T1, Fract-T1, DSL?

by: smartin0924Posted on 2004-02-12 at 07:35:56ID: 10343317

I would love nothing more than to put another DC at the site.  We are a non-profit organization and money is tight. I will attempt to set up the DHCP again to push out over the VPN.  To answer your question regarding the speed..we are running Cable 2meg down 768 up at all locations. Both the satelitte sites and the Main Site.

by: KingHollisPosted on 2004-02-12 at 07:53:26ID: 10343496

Yes, I know the feeling! Okay then ultimately we need to clean up the VPN connection. If it is solid, you shouldn't have these problems. Again, my concern is that you have the SOHO box performing DHCP. Here's what should be going on:

RemoteNET---->[internal SOHO2: 192.168.1.2]<SOHO2>[external SOHO2: 66.45.23.13]==VPN==[external SOHO1: 86.65.12.7]<SOHO1>[internal SOHO1: 192.168.1.1]<---MainNET

Give all machines in RemoteNET a 192.168.1.50-80 range and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.2 and DNS and WINS to the DC at MainNET. Give all machines at MainNET a 192.168.1.10-49 range address and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and DNS and WINS to the DC at MainNET and give the DC something like 192.168.1.100 to distinguish it from the client addresses.

How differently is your setup from this? Changing the names/IPs to protect the innocent, of course!

by: smartin0924Posted on 2004-02-12 at 08:48:41ID: 10344076

That is pretty much how we are setup.

No would I just establish this through the DHCP Server?  Assigning Different Pools?

by: KingHollisPosted on 2004-02-12 at 09:15:01ID: 10344335

No, scrap DHCP for now. We need to know that this is working manually then we can sort out the DHCP.

grblades,

I have to believe that we were on a solid path to a solution. But unfortunately, we were unable to get consistent involvement from the questioner. At the very least, I believe that the question should be PAQ'd as there's enough good information there to assist others.
