The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Slow scrolling on the network.

Tags: scrolling, slow
Hello,

I have a customer who has a cable modem 100 M connection.  Pages seem to load slow and scrolling on a web page is very slow.  He is running 768 M of memory.  I checked the setting in internet options for smooth scrolling but to no avail.  We even tried downloading Netscape 7.1.  Thinking that his IE was bad.  Any suggestions to correct this?
I appreciate the help.

Sincerely,

Compucharley

What OS?

First of all try the System File Checker:
  Click Start
  Click Run
In the Open box that appears, type->
  SFC /PurgeCache <ENTER>
  SFC /ScanNow <ENTER>
You may need your installation source (CD) as this process will replace corrupted drivers on your system.

If you're running XP/2K, use the above, otherwise for 98 - just SFC without the parameter

========================================================================================================================
Try removing items from Startup:
  Click Start
  Click Run
In the Open box that appears, type->
  MSCONFIG <ENTER>
In the Startup tab, start out by disabling everything you're unfamiliar with (or everything if you're
  unsure).
Optionally, you can also disable non-Microsoft services from the Services tab.
If the problem no longer exists after a reboot, then you can narrow it down as one of the items in your
startup.  To permanently remove these item(s), proceed as follows...

  Click Start
  Click Run
In the Open box that appears, type->
  REGEDIT <ENTER>
*Be careful when editing the registry as an accidental deletion can render your system inoperable.
First navigate to the following key in the registry:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Once found, click File, Export to save a copy of the key before you delete any items (if necessary).
After the file has been saved, delete items as needed from the right pane.
Now find the next startup key:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Follow the previous procedures to export a copy before deleting items from the right pane.

Remove temp files from the system:
  Click Start
  Click Run
In the Open box that appears, type->
  %TEMP% <ENTER>
This is your profile's temporary folder location.  All files can be deleted here, but not the containing
folder.  Some files may be in use, so an error may be generated but can be ignored.
System temp folder can be found by Start->Run->%systemroot%\temp

Blackviper's site is great for freeing up resources by stopping/disabling unneeded services:
For Win2k: http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm
For XP: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

========================================================================================================================

Also, Symantec's Autoprotect service has been known to cause buggy problems with high cpu utilization.  Try stopping that service and see if the problem disappears.

Try re-registering autoprotect: (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/b69c799adfa31ecc85256aa30052f4d0/f0c69fcb50e2eeaa85256b180068dbf5?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam)

To unregister and then register the Auto-Protect service:
Exit all open programs.
Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Type the following and press Enter:
"C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe" /unregserver
NOTE: This is the default location for NAV installed as a stand-alone product. If NAV is part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW), then substitute the program path for the NAV module of NSW.
Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
Type the following, and then press Enter:
"c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe" /service
NOTE: This is the default location for NAV installed as a stand-alone product. If NAV is part of Norton SystemWorks (NSW), then substitute the program path for the NAV module of NSW.
Close the Services program.
Open NAV.
Click Options, and then click Auto-Protect.
In the right screen, click "Enable Auto-Protect (Recommended)" and "Start Auto-Protect when Windows starts up," and then click OK.
Restart the computer.

Winsock/TcpIp may be corrupted.  Try repairing with this utility (works on XP/2K): http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

The pages load slowly.  I suppose pages on the internet? When did this occur and what sites are you browsing? Did you try browing other sites? If so and the pages loaded slowly then log on to your router or firewall and issue the command tracert and wait for the reply back. If the internet routers report back less than 150 ms average time then wha i would do is to physically check all your connections. Make sure all wires are firmly plugged into your switches, routers and firewalls. If they are and if your pages are loading slowly then post your switches and routers and firewall configs so that we can take a look at them.
Hope this helps,

If the page scrolls slowly after it has completely loaded, this is not a network issue, it's a local issue with the machine (could be either hardware or software, but it's not the internet connection).

sirbounty - please stop using so many consecutive "=" characters in your posts so that the question now requires annoying horizontal scrolling, even at 1024x768.  I might also suggest doing away with them altogether - if you are so uncertain about a solution that you feel it is necessary to post such a huge response that it needs lines of "=" characters to keep it all straight, maybe you should ask the original poster for clarification so that your responses can be more spefically tailored to the solution.

Thanks,
-Jon

So, what wound up being the problem?

He is mentionning that the pages are loading slowly and scrolling is slow. These are 2 unrelated events.
