remote desktop connection problem with xp

i have a new laptop with windows xp home. i am trying to access a windows 2k terminal server using remote desktop connection and everytime i try i get the error message "the client could not establish a connection to the remote computer". I can get to the terminal server with my old laptop which has the exact same settings under remote desktop and networks. I have tried connecting via my router, direct to cable modem, and via phone... no luck. i have tried other computers in my company and have the same results... no luck getting through. my laptop works and another computer that i set up over a year ago both work flawlessly but i cannot get any new computer to work. any ideas?

ps - i have tried deleting the registry key and it does not help
