Um does your ISP require authentication for sending mail and do you have your password set up in outlook?

Browse All TopicsHi all, hope some one can help me as this is driving me mad.
Since a few days ago I have been getting this message when sending emails from my main email address:
Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
Subject: RE: PS CS
Sent: 19/02/2004 8:14
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'recipient@anywhere.com' on 19/02/2004 8:14
550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for recipient@anywhere.com
(I have replaced the real email address with 'recipient@anywhere.com')
I run Outlook 2002 on a W2K Pro machine and connect to the 'net via a Netgear RT314 router and a Netgear DM602 ADSL modem. I do not run Exchange on my PC and I can receive emails without a problem. I have tried everything to solve this - deleted and recreated the email account, run a virus scan (with 100% up to date virus defs), run AdAware, turned off the SMTP server in IIS5, searched Google - none of this makes any difference.
The interesting thing is that the email address that doesn't work is from my web hosting company. My ISP also gives me an email address which I rarely use but that sends and receives fine. These two companies are not related and so the POP3 and SMTP servers are totally different machines in different domains etc.
I have talked to my web hosting co (run by a friend) and he insists everything is fine and his other clients can send emails with no problems. One other thing - I can send an email to him or send one to my other email addresses hosted by his company without problem - but as soon as it tries to go to the outside world is when I get the error.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Has my email address been blacklisted somewhere (is that even possible?) or would this suggest a definate problemw ith the Exchange server of my web hosting co?
Thanks in advance for any help...
Mike.

Are you able to check the internet header of the error message that comes back to you? You could at least then see at what point it is getting blocked. It is possible as suggested by sunray that a firewall on your computer or system is blocking it, or there's an outside chance that their webserver co is blocking it somehow. I would try using another machine as already suggested also and see if you can at least isolate the problem to your machine or not.
The relay error points to an smtp server config problem.
Is your mail going via the wrong mailserver?
I used to get this message when I change networks (e.g. from my work connection to my home connection) before I set up my mailservers correctly in my account profiles .
Alternatively, it may be that your ISP has started blocking relays or port 25.
1) Your mail server ->(DNS) ISP -> other ISP(DNS) -> other mail server
Just to make sure your domain name is under one company and your Internet connection is under another company ? You have more than one domain name ?
Could be because:
1) It could be because there may be some problem with your domain name in your web hosting company DNS Server. (SMTP only connect if another server name can be reach)
2) Your own email address is incorrect.(use telnet to connect to your SMTP to do testing)
3) Because you mention if you send email via other mail server to other mail server it works fine but your mail server to other mail server failed. This is definitely your problem. Check the following:
Mail server (SMTP) Domain Name setting and server name
- mx.yourdomain.com (ping it and see if you get response)
OS: Domain , IP address(Should be same as your SMTP Setting), subnet mask, DNS server
- the DNS server is your ISP DNS (This domain name to IP match must exist in your ISP DNS Server)
This take a while . good luck
Well, I'm completely stumped on this one... yesterday I tried everything you guys suggested as well as upgrading my modem/router firmware, deleteing and recreating the account etc and still nothing worked. As a test I set up SMTP server (in IIS5) on my dekstop and it started sending OK. I then switched back to my normal (non-working) SMTP server and it didn't work again... but here's where it gets weird...
I went back into the account in Outlook and simply unchecked then rechecked the box in the advanced settings where you tell it to log into the incoming mail server (both are the same) and it suddenly started working! But they are the *exact* settings I've always used... my web host says he didn't change anything at all so I'm completely stumped as why it just started working suddenly!
So, how to award the points... to be honest I don't think anyone here really solved it for me - it just seemed to start working so it could easily have been some sort of glitch somewhere that ironed itself out or it could been a combination of upgraded firmware and recreating the account - I just don't know. I guess I *could* just say I'm not awarding any points but since 4 of you (sunray_2003, duffbk4, wyliecoyoteuk and ah_son) suggested useful things I am going to split the points into 4 and award you 125 each.
Thanks for everyone's input... wish I knew what the actual solution was - just of those things I guess!
Mike
Dimante, all my settings (including the ones you suggested) were in place and had worked for months... it wasn't like I added them in for the first time and it worked. If you re-read my comment above you'll see that those options were already ticked/set - all I did was *uncheck* and *recheck* the incoming mail server login and it worked. Perhaps I could have split the points 5 ways but I felt the other answers were more in-depth and helped me rule out a lot of things.

Do you know if using the same outgoing and incoming mail server , it works in anyother machine. Have you tried that ?
Ask your friend to try in his outlook giving the same mail server information..
Also while sending email , temporarily disable firewall and anti-virus
