Question

How to setup a 2948g-l3 as an L2 switch?

Asked by: Mechno

I'm pretty sure that this is just a simple config option, but how do I set up a Cisco catalyst 2948G L3 to function just as a switch, without its layer 3 functionality?
Any config examples would be very helpful!
thanks in advance for this easy but important question.

Don't configure any VLANs.  By default, all the ports will be in the same VLAN.  Don't assign an IP address to the default VLAN - you'll have a Layer 2 switch only.

well, I need the unit to have an IP for monitoring/graphing/management/etc but won't the interfaces still be in the format FastEthernet2/0 through FastEthernet2/50 or something like that?

In my experience, the unit is far more routerlike than switchlike...

You can still assign an IP address to VLAN1 for management purposes but as long as you don't create other VLANs on the switch, no routing will occur or is necessary.  If you still want multiple VLANs on the switch but without routing between them, use the "no ip routing" command in terminal configuration mode and you will have a layer 2 only switch.

Alternatively, you could assign all of the ports to the same bridge group.  On a router model, you'd have to turn on ibr first, I don't know whether that would be true in this case.

Well, it's close...

The goal:
The goal is to have the 2948 function purely as a switch with the exception of having an IP 0address for maintenance.

The theory:
Port one is in it's own bridge group and is numbered as 192.168.0.2 and is connected to a management router with an address of 192.168.0.1.

The problem: throughput is not what it should be, connections for file transfers between nodes are very slow and are timing out.

Here's the config as is:

Don't know if you got the problem sorted but I see from your config that you have all ports set to 100/full. If you manually set one end then the other end must allso be specifically configured. If the clients are set to auto then you will probably find that they have audiscovered to a speed of 100/half and this is what is causing your speed problem.
Setting the switch to auto or the clients to 100/full should fix the speed issue.
