duplicate emails

I have recently installed Windows 2003 with the exchange server and have had no problems up until end of last week.  The problem is that some people in the intranet are getting duplicate emails.  The duplicate emails come from both people within the intranet and outside the intranet.

Also what's more confusing is that not evey email they get is duplacated.  And when they do get duplicate emails, they come at different times.  For example, they will get an email at 2 and then 30mins later they get the same email again, even though the other person did not send it twice.

Please help.

I have a theory :)
Maybe a forwarding issue.
In your active directory, right click and select properties on the user that is recieving these duplicates. Select one of the exchange tabs (cant remember exactly which one, but its the one where you can select forwarding) and under the forwarding textbox, there is a checkbox, which when checked sends an email to the domains email account for that user and to the forwarded email address. Untick tick to recieve only email.

The reason you may be getting some emails at 20-30 min delays could be beacuse if a user has email username@YourDomain.com and is forwarded to username@hotmail.com, the hotmail.com would obvioulsy take longer to get the email than your local domain.

As to why not all get duplicated, this may be because some other protocol was used or the username@hotmail.com was used to send the email and not username@YourDomain.com  which is doing the forwarding.

Ok, if this is not correct, then I need more info :)

Another Idea . . . Do you have any antivirus program scanning the M drive or other exchange folders?  I have sometimes seen when antivirus programs mess with the exchange system files it will cause all kinds of problems.
This may sound stupid...but if they are using outlook, look in the mail configuration, under "more settings" and "advanced" there is an option to "keep a copy of the mail on the mail server".  If the clients are checking their mail on different machines I have noticed that u will get duplicates with this option on...

Just a simple thought...

Thanks for the prompt replies.

I have checked the user for the 'forwarding issue' anil mentioned.. but that does not seem to be the case.  The user has no forwarding settings assigned to it.

I'm going to have to check the SMTP settings again to see if there are any problems with that.

thx
Okay... something really weird happend!

After looking at the SMTP setting and turning of Firewall I still had the same problem.  So finally I got fed up and reboot the server.  Low and behold, the duplicate emails stopped.  I don't know if rebooting fixed it, or I did something in the settings what I was unaware of.

But anyway, it's been two days now and now duplicates.

Thanks for ur help guys.

Would have been cool if we figured out why this was happening, but at least its fixed. :)
This pose can be closed now, right?
yep
