Browse All TopicsGreetings. I used have a simple Linksys BESR41 etherfast router that did a fine job keeping us connected to the internet.
Two weeks ago I upgraded to the RV082 VPN Firewall router. After I logged in and changed all settings to the correct ones it still couldn't connect. We have a Westell DSL modem using static IP. I did everything.
* I turned off DHCP
* turned off firewall
* have no VPN's configured
* upgraded the firmware to the latest 1.1.1
* rebooted the router, modem and my computer
* no port forwarding or UPnP is configured
* MTU size is 1492
Finally I called Linksys tech support and after escalating the problem to second level (1.5 hours on the phone) they were unable to determine the problem. They thought it was a bad router, so I RMA'd it to Newegg and they sent me a new one. Now this router has exaclty the same problem.
I doubt both routers would be flawed in exactly the same way. Our internet works fine when I switch back to the BESR41 router.

besfr41 rules i have 1.
well worth the firmware upgrades , of course picking the right firmware depends on your needs ,
go to dslreports.com , they have a forum area didicated to linksys routers and troubleshooting
them , thats were i go to keep updated on what breaks and what staying working when updating
firmwares.
I upgraded to the RV082 because it has a full featured SPI firewall and full VPN capabilities. It also has failover and load-balancing. The besfr41 has neither and is mostly good for home users. I researched the RV on newsgroups and the general conclusion was that the 1.1.1 latest firmware is good and makes the router reliable.
Sir bounty, yes I can get into the config page and change all settings. It's just that the router doesn't connect to any external IP.
Magus, yes I have set the correct static IP settings and we do have a static IP. The same settings work with the BESFR41.
Ok, in the last few weeks a new firmware came out (1.1.3 on may 21).
It fixes "a fatal DNS handling bug occurs in v1.1.2.
This bug made DNS related functions, such as IPSec DNS Resolved, DNS
Name Lookup and DNS proxy, worked abnormally. "
For some reason I think this may have something to do with the problem -- I will install it tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
As I said, this is a BUGGY router they want the end user to test??? Nonsense, send it back for a refund, make THEM pay to test it. It is not up to the public to debug obvious flaws in software. I stand by my original comment, that unless MFgs are made to be responsible for their defects, they will forever suck off gullible people, to be the guinea pigs to test their equipment for them, at no cost.
Sciwriter,
I agree with you that Linksys could be more responsible in regression testing prior to release of their products. Returning the router is time consuming and annoying. I am hoping to get this working. If there is some setting that I am missing or it is merely a firmware update, I want to try that.
It has good reviews:

Previously a tech support rep told me that there can be problems any router is assigned 192.168.1.1. She said it conflits with the DSL modem. I wasn't aware that the DSL modem has an IP. I don't think that is correct -- is there some truth to it?
Yes, we were using static IP on the old BESFR41. Exactly the same settings.
When I try to resolve a DNS address using the router's diagnostic it cannot resolve. This indicates that the problem isn't at the PC level, it's at the router level. The router itself is not able to ping or resolve external addresses.
Problem solved. I just spent literally two hours with Linksys tech support. They were very good, patient, and knowledgable. It got escalated to the supervisor who conducted tracert's and so forth and discovered this.
Verizon gave me a gateway address that was dissimilar from my IP (or else I accidently hit 5 instead of 4 on the phone).
For example, my IP:
146.230.14.5
Verizon gateway: 156.230.14.7
Now, oddly these numbers were working perfectly with the BESR41 router. We had no problems using this gateway. The support technician at linksys told me that it was mere luck that this was working and after running tracert's diagnosed that the gateway should really be:
146.230.14.7
I could have diagnosed this if not for the fact that the numbers worked correctly with the BESR41 router. If I wouldn't have been able to connect with the older router I would have known that the numbers supplied to me by Verizon were not right.
Now it is fixed. I appreciate everybody's attempt to help me and I will split points.

Can you get into the config page and determine if it's getting an IP address?
