Question

Remote Desktop Connection

Asked by: Lapchien

We have a Windows 2003 Terminal Server working perfectly, with clients able to connect externally - no problem.  However, we have 1 client who cannot connect - just gets the 'cannot connect...' message back immediatley upon trying to connect.

He is running XP Pro, no software firewall...

get the user to check his event view and also check the servers event viewer. they hold many secrets when it comes to terminal server :)

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-06-30 at 08:16:25ID: 11436803

Probably his TCP/IP is not setup properly.

Check to see whether he is able to ping the RDP server.

start->run
cmd

ping ww.xx.yy.zz

Also check the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway, and DNS he is using

IPconfig /all

by: net_sec_guruPosted on 2004-06-30 at 08:16:40ID: 11436809

If this is a external customer, they may have TS blocked up stream. So the connection is reset either by his router or firewall. Just need to ensure that's not the case.

Otherwise, can he terminal service to any other machines? His configuration may need to be checked.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-06-30 at 09:56:27ID: 11438009

He has an ADSL router, all working fine.  Any other machine plugged in to his router has no trouble connecting to the TS.  On the dodgy machine he can browse the web no problem.  But he just cannot access the TS, no matter what client - RDC, TS client, webclient (tsweb)...  It must be something on his PC?

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-06-30 at 09:57:37ID: 11438026

BTW this particular PC cannot connect to any other terminal server...

Are the other clients running XP also?

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-06-30 at 10:53:39ID: 11438637

Yes, XP Pro.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-06-30 at 23:27:04ID: 11443888

make sure that this client network user name have a dial in permission , and also is configured in remote access policy inside routing and remote access.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-06-30 at 23:33:50ID: 11443929

I even get as far as the server login screen - it just bounces the attempt immediately, i.e. within 0.1 second!

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-01 at 08:29:53ID: 11447726

Has that particular user been given permissions to log into terminal services?
Can you login as a different user?

Also what mode are you running in?
Administration mode?

How many simultaneous connection are you licensed for?
How computers are connected at any one time?

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-01 at 08:48:48ID: 11448016

This user CAN access TS from ANY other client, just not this PC.  It just has to be something mis-configured on his PC.  He can ping the TS no problem.

TS is in user mode and works perfectly for all others.

TS is licensed for 10 users and we only ever see 1 or 2 users at any one time.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-01 at 09:40:39ID: 11448749

well in that case disable built in firwall or if you are using another firewall software make trusted banned for this server so the user can access this network - this is an i dea - other thing does this user can access server network and see all sharing file there??

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-01 at 09:56:51ID: 11448988

This 'mini' network is at this users house.  He has a switch/router, and this PC is connected to that (along with another machine, which connects with any issue).

As I said above, this PC has NO firewall setup - not even the XP one.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-01 at 12:37:59ID: 11450850

so he has the problem with configuration , he can check up his VPN connection and configuration, special internet protocol he don't need to configure it if he has , just work automatically-, working with PPTP protocol or IPSEC one ..(check networking in VPN connection.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-01 at 13:00:33ID: 11451050

No VPN - just direct connection...

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-01 at 13:23:55ID: 11451292

well if he has got direct connection to the terminal server through router what do you mean by  (just gets the 'cannot connect...' message back immediatley upon trying to connect) ? does he logon to this terminal server by entering user name , password , and domain name and he couldn't connect ?? does he configure his computer to work within domain or alone (no domain) just accessing the server by entering user name and password remotly??

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-01 at 14:00:51ID: 11451608

Ok - he switches his PC on, gets his desktop etc.  He can go on to the Internet no problem.

He clicks the 'Remote Desktop Connection', enters the IP address of the server, clicks 'connect', and BANG - he cannot connect, just gets a message box saying '....cannot connect to the server..... may be busy...'

No TS server logon. nothing.  Just this error.

Any other PC works fine.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-01 at 22:37:07ID: 11454203

well you can do this option , you can reinstall remote desktop from XP CD ==> additional task  and see , second thing try to enter user name and password without domain , and see what happened

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-01 at 23:40:23ID: 11454460

Yes, I already tried that - so far nothing works, not new installs of the RDC, TS client, Web client - nothing!

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-02 at 09:53:16ID: 11458251

did he tried to logon with new account and a new user , at it still did not work? at the same computer..

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-07 at 03:51:16ID: 11489962

I assume that these users are spread out geographically.

Maybe ask the ISP whether the port used by RDP is blocked.
Or if the ISP is using some kind of proxy that does not allow the guy to connect.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-07 at 04:09:10ID: 11490104

No, that's not the case - the user has a 'home network', connected via a shared ADSL router, his 'other' machines can connect ok, therefore it has to be something to do with the configuration of his PC!

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-08 at 09:39:53ID: 11503890

It is still possible to browse without all the required IP settings,
specifically Derault Gateway, and DNS
by using a the proxy settings int the web browser.

Is the default gateway set in his TCP/IP settings?
Can he trace the route to the RDP server?
start->run
cmd
tracert ww.xx.yy.xx

What does he happens when he telnets to the RDP Server RDP port?

telnet ww.xx.yy.xx 3189
(not sure about that port)
The response should be...
"Press any key to continue"

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-08 at 09:45:08ID: 11503964

DG set fine.  Tracert as far as the last hop no problem.

Cannot Telnet to the server though...

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-08 at 10:12:04ID: 11504240

correct port is 3389

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-08 at 10:18:04ID: 11504308

Yes, I know.

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-09 at 07:48:20ID: 11512409

Fine.

Try reinstalling TCP/IP.
i.e. remove it.
restart
add it

Hopefully this should repair any faults in the stack.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-09 at 07:50:12ID: 11512426

Did it - I deleted both Winsock entries from the reg and added Microsoft TCP/IP back... still no joy...

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-09 at 08:43:10ID: 11513004

Don't quite understand what you did with that reg thing...

Anyway...

What I meant was:
Right click My network places.
select properties

Select the NIC
right click->properties
select TCP/IP
click remove.
Click OK

Right click on the nick again
Click disable
Riht click again
click enable

Install TCP/IP again
R

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-09 at 09:15:53ID: 11513370

You cannot orinarily 'uninstall' TCP/IP from XP Pro...

The way around it is to do what I did above.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-09 at 10:35:50ID: 11514158

did  he change  or use TCP/IP filtering to disable accessing some ports ??
well the other solution that can help is to use TSWEB to access remote machine instead of using normal remote desktop connection , because TSWEB has nothing to do with his computer if he want to asscess terminal server.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-09 at 10:57:29ID: 11514320

As above, TSWEB does not work either.  There's no filtering enabled.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-09 at 23:57:04ID: 11517562

yes this is the point if TSWEB does not work that mean his computer has nothing to do with configuration , because TSWEB act as a remote server if it does not work then there is missed configuration with port mapping , please check back if he could connect to the internet he could see TSWEB site but he could not login . is that true ?? or either he couldn't see the web server ???

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-10 at 09:39:15ID: 11519628

Looks like we have tried everything.

I suggest you repair your XP installation by doing an inplace upgrade an described in:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;315341

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-10 at 10:54:15ID: 11520098

Yes, he can see the login screen for TSWEB, but the connect button is greyed out.  Also I already tried the inplace upgrade...

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-10 at 12:09:12ID: 11520343

well did you suspect if there is a virus or not ?? try using Adware plus it will clean your registery if there is problem .. and what do yoy mean by grayed out ?? it seems he is inacessable for any thing in to your server ..

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-10 at 12:54:10ID: 11520490

I run a virus check - nothing. I have run adaware - nothing. don't want to rebuild the pc.

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-07-12 at 03:12:01ID: 11527773

Try swapping IP addresses with a client that works.

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:35:18ID: 11528531

Tried that. doesn't work (the ADSL router also provides IP's by DHCP)

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:38:35ID: 11528549

did you tried to use static IP instead of dynamics IP's

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:39:37ID: 11528561

Yes - still unable to connect.

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:45:56ID: 11528593

then why don't you try to change his ethernet card if you can , may be the serveris  blocking his mac address..

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:47:02ID: 11528604

The server never sees his mac address - only the mac address of the router (which already allows access to other clients)!!!

by: lenaTamimiPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:48:47ID: 11528619

ok then try just to change ethernet card and tell me  what will happen??

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-07-12 at 05:52:30ID: 11528646

This machine originally had a USB modem, which did not connect as I have stated.  Then we've installed a router, other clients can connect from this users site, but not this particular PC.  We've removed the USB modem and used the on-board ethernet card, still connot connect.  The PC must have a fault.  I will recommend that the user rebuilds his PC from scratch.  I will lcose this question as unaswerable.

by: nlcafePosted on 2004-10-05 at 12:26:55ID: 12230237

im actually having this exact same problem...

on client computer A you can access all different terminal servers except for a terminal server X
the other computers in the same network can access the terminal server X just fine
but as soon as computer A tries to access the terminal server X it recieves the message:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the client could not establish a remote connection to the computer

the most likely causes of this error are:
1) remote connections might not be enabled on the remote computer
2) the maximum number of connections was exceeded at the remote computer
3) a network error has occurred while establishing the connection
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) the remote computer has terminal services enabled and can accept connections from other computers on the network
2) the maximum number of connections was not exceeded because it is licensed for 10 users and only 1 user was trying to connect
3) network error has not occurred because it is able to connect to other terminal servers

by: NyaemaPosted on 2004-10-09 at 06:52:20ID: 12266117

select hardware tab
select device manager
select network adapters
right click on the nic used by your pc to connect to the network.
right click on it
select uninstall
click on ok

Select action on the menu bar

try RDP to server

by: nlcafePosted on 2004-10-11 at 05:36:48ID: 12275661

i wish that network protocols were the problem for this one, but i have tried all of this...

started off with a fresh preload from ibm
formatted drive and tried a full reload of volume licensed xp pro from msdn, still have the problem
tried a new nic card, still same problem
even tried a new hard drive, formatted it and installed xp pro, still same thing

i am having the client return the computer

I hate to ask a silly question because there are a lot of talented people looking at this, but are his user credentials cached?  I read above that you had him try to log in as a new user...did it work?  Did it update his default profile?  I would verify that this machine is not set up to log in to TS as the user credentials that he is logging on to the local machine with.  We had a similar problem with a contractor that was connecting to our servers and his home office servers.

by: ENetProPosted on 2004-10-25 at 16:08:36ID: 12405994

I two had this problem once this corrected my problem.
1)one thing you could do is check to see if the user has sufficient rights in the group policy.
2)also depending on witch switch you have you may need to set up or correct port forwarding on the actual switch its self.

ENETPRO

by: ENetProPosted on 2004-10-25 at 16:20:08ID: 12406075

Also your client you wish to connect from should also have a static IP address if you are setting up port forwarding

ENETPRO

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-10-25 at 23:29:40ID: 12408107

Not a group policy issue - the user can logon from ANY other PC on that side of the network.

Also not a switch issue - the user can logon from any other PC connected to the switch on that side of the network...

Hi,

it would be quite helpful for all of us if u would post direct IP addresses, maybe like ww.109.44.33. surely nobody wants to cause any harm....

by: Cloud9_UserPosted on 2004-10-28 at 09:22:22ID: 12435712

Hi,

Has the PC been updated to SP2?
Is it automatically downloading the windows updates?

I recently had a client who couldn't maintain a citrix session over s/w VPN.
Turns out XP retrieving SP2 was killing the bandwidth to the point where a thin client session couldn't be maintained or established but browsing the web and downloading appeared as normal.

Appears Windows Update gives bandwidth back to IE but not thin clients.

Plus, (utterly guessing), all the restarts etc reset the SP download back to the start?

Try running the SP2 update?

by: gacadminPosted on 2004-11-04 at 06:17:59ID: 12493710

on your 2k3 server do you the correct amount of cals, if so are they specified as per device or per cal? i would look there considering you have tried everything else. another common issue is a local GPO setting applied to the clients machine, but if this is just a standard install then that wpould not be the case.

as for the web client being greyed out, did the active x control load?

and if he can not telnet to port 3389 i would check to see if that port is restricted on that box.....

by: nextgen00Posted on 2004-11-04 at 15:50:12ID: 12499820

On his Home Router...  you obviously have port 3389 open to his other home PC.  What to his?  On some home routers when you open a port (Forward) the port, it only goes to one internal client.  What model router is at his home?  Linksys? Netgear? If you could give me the make and model, I could look into it quickly and tell you how it SHOULD be configured.

I have a similar situation with some linksys router that you can only open a port once and forward it to one internal IP.  Try this:
Jot down the IP of his other PC that CAN connect and work with TS.  Shut off that PC.
Static configure the Problem PCs IP address to the one that the working PC had.
Then give it a shot.
If that works... Great.  If not Let me know... I'll try to help more.

Has the computer got permission to connect on your server? go in your active directery users and computers and add it. i know it sounds simple but i missed that at first :s lol also is your server running a firewall? mine once ran one which blocked only one computer. if so, try removing it and see if it can connect

by: LapchienPosted on 2004-11-04 at 23:16:37ID: 12501920

It was never a router or server issue - I rebuilt the PC and now it connects just fine.

Although the questoin appears to be dead, I would just like to add my to cents worth to anyone else in a similiar situation.  Did you ever check out the services that were running on the PC?  With problems like this it is almost always a service issue, especially if a soft restore did not fix the issue, but a full restore did.  Just a thought, hope it helps.

Lap, did you by chance replace the motherboard on the pc? because what i posted above about the client returning the pc. She went out and bought 3 more IBM desktop computers and they all have the same problem lol. tried a fresh install of xp, a new NIC, and a new HD. also tried a IBM labtop and it also refused connection.

We are having this exact problem in our coroprate network - three machines so far, out of 1100. The strange thing is, we CAN connect to a different termical server, and after that the original terminal server works just fine.

Very strange indeed...

To any one who has trouble connecting a client to a terminal server and is unable to.

See MS Article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/248430/EN-US/

This article talks about transferring a CAL from one pc to another, but I used it to delete the key when a client was unable to connect after being upgraded. The former client as a 98 machine upgraded to 2K.

Yes - we found the solution to our problem a while ago, I just forgot to post it. You can't connect to a Windows 2000 server until you've connected to a Windows 2003 server and received a CAL...

We had a similar problem with a single xp pro client that could not connect via RDP to any server that it had previously connected.  It also had problems with Microsoft's windows update....could not get it to install any new updates.....kept getting a failed message...so,

We register two dlls:

             regsvr32 msxml3.dll
             regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

then cleared the terminal server cache on the xp client machine under
C:\Documents and Settings\< user profile>\ Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Cache

and clear all info from IE, including files and history, etc
Had to reset default security levels also

rebooted xp client and was able connected to other servers using RDP and complete windows update.
