Wireless Networking question

Hi all,
I have a wireless network running between a PC and a laptop. The PC has a PCI 802.11b 11MB/s card in, the laptop the PCMCIA equivelant. The range is awful! As soon as I move the laptop more than 5 feet away it stops responsing to the network. Can anyone suggest any makeshift aerials I can create, or where to buy the best alternative? Range and reliability is a key factor with this problem as it is on a business network. Also would you recommend a faster card?

Wow, five feet is really bad.  With WiFi you should typically be able to get out at least 50 feet, give or take a few depending on the construction of the building.  Are you running an adhoc network between the two or are you using a wireless access point to connect them?

It seems like you are running a ad-hoc wireless network.  The best thing to do, if feasible, would be to change it to a WLAN.  In order to do that, you would need to purchase a wireless router (Linksys and SMC are generally pretty good) and set it up as a network.  This would improve your range considerably, give you the ability to add a broadband connection to the network, and add quite a few more wireless devices if you so chose.  If you have any questions on how to set up a WLAN, just ask.
