Dial up connection problem

Windows 98se fully updated via win update.
Will connect to the internet via lan on broadband, veiw web pages, collect email no problem.
But via dial up it's a different story:  will make the dial up connection, be it very slow to login.  when connected will not display any web pages in internet explorer, and will not collect email?  IE6 display page not available and OE6 times out!
before the windows updates the dial up connection was working as far as I am aware.
Any help appreciated

If you look at the connection icon in the tray how fast is the actual connection when you dial up?

Go into the dial up parameters for the modem setup -- network, right click properties, modem connection, right click, properties, netoworking tab, TCP/IP protocol, properties -- now at the bottom of the screen put in the two DNS servers that the dial up ISP uses.  You can usually find this on the dial-up providers website -- under support, DNS servers.  Those need to be in there, in any case where you are not "resolving" the internet via dial up.  Save it and reboot, now it will work.

Thanks.  I checked the dns server address.  There was an address in there but the wrong one.  The internet and email is now working ok.  However another problem has presented itself.  I select always dial my default connection and apply setting.  But on a reboot the setting reverts back to never dial a connection?  Any ideas or should I submit this as a new question?

If you have broadband as well, it WILL default to never dial a connection, because you don't want it to dial when you are on broadband -- two routes to the internet cause IP resolution problems.  Let me check it out and I will post a solution, don't need to open another question yet.

Maybe you just need to click the button -- SET AS DEFAULT -- after you make the change -- see here --

If that doesn't work, here is a registry fix -- before editing the registry, export it to a text file, to save the current setup.  Run regedit, then export entire registry, then choose "all registry" and save to a file called current-registry.reg

Now you can go in and check for missing or corrupted keys --  This is a windows ME fix, but the registry key names should be much the same as this.  Don't do this if you are afraid to edit the registry --

Look at the line above "autodialidname32" where is says default. If it is "not set", change it it to 0 and see if that does the right action.  If not, try 1.  This problem can happen from missing or corrupt registry entries in the autodailer.
