The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. ZoneAlarm config for Internet Connection Sharing (XP)

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting a networked virtual Mac online through WinXP(home)'s Internet connection Sharing with ZoneAlarm personal. The Mac OS X 10.3.4 is emulated on PearPC (a sourceforge app) and connects to my PC via OpenVPN's virtual TAP-Win32 adapter. When I enabled ICS on my (PPPoa, dynamic-IP) DSL connection, it set the TAP adapter's IP as (static) 129.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0 and when the emulator was running, its LAN adapter was set by DHCP as 129.168.0.234 / 255.255.255.0 and the LAN worked so they could ping each other. But ZA running prevented the Mac from accessing websites or pinging external IPs, even though the Mac was capable of establishing the internet connection by itself (I gave it permission to do this in ICS settings). Everything works beautifully with ZA off, but I don't want to make a habit of that!

The firewall automatically added the TAP adapter's IP and mask to the Internet Zone, which I changed to Trusted Zone - to no effect. I also tried adding the Mac's IP/mask and an IP range 129.168.0.0-255 to the Trusted Zone, but these don't help either, even after restarting ZA.

My problem is I know very little about ICS, networking etc. so everything I've achieved so far has been through trial and error (and help from the PearPC forum). Any ZoneAlarm and TCP/IP experts out there, I'm VERY keen to hear your thoughts!
