Question

how to block internet access except Sabre and Outlook Express??

Asked by: techcity

Hi All

One of the clients is a travel agency. The business owner has been bugged by employee's surfing net during work hours.

Is there any solutions which can block Internet Explorer and MSN, but leave Sabre and Outlook Express running?

Note:
They have a peer to peer network.
Sabre is an online flight ticket ordering system

Thanks a lot

Jack

You have to install a proxy  on the gateway Machine?

I don't know how your network is configured. for anyone to help you  need to tell us how does your clients access the internet. This way we will be able to tell you if you have to configure each machine or just a Gateway server.

Hi I am not sure of your technical level but let me know if you would like more information.

A firewall will help you out or a proxy server.
Both will be an acceptable solution.
You can use zone alarm professional (firewall) and close all ports but the following. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
You can also install a proxy server that will ban access to the internet (port 80 , 81...) http://www.winproxy.com/index.asp

Close all in and out ports except.

open port 110 (pop) for receiving email
open port 25 (smtp) for sending mail
open port  1001 (for sabre client)
open port 53 (DNS) for name resolution of your mail server and so on.

There are more solutions if you are looking for them too.

    Regards,

If you dont need internet explorer, you can turn it off with group policy or local securty policy on windows 2000 or windows xp pro.
I have also seen a sneaky ways by going about it by going into internet options, connections, lan settings, select use proxy server for you LAN, click on advanced and enter in bogus info under HTTP.

Get zonealarm, have it block all programs but the ones you want, and then password protect it.

Thanks a lot for all of you people's help

This is a peer to peer network. There is no hardware router has been setup. They use Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to share the internet connection.

If a hardware router works on the problem, they donot mind to buy one, it is cheap anyway.

I prefer a centralized management solution on this problem: either a router or a proxy software loaded on the main PC. If there is no such solution, I will go with ZoneAlarm, in that way, i have to load ZoneAlarm on 6 PCs and configure them one by one, this seems not to be very efficient.

Sabre has different versions, this one does not use VPN though. This Saber is Java based and  needs users to log into Sabre's web site.

    Thanks again

    Jack

As I susgested on the 1rst  post you need to install a proxy on the gateway machine if you want Centralize mgmt.
Most proxy software will require a server platform .
If you Have a server in your network You could try the following link:
    http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/

ZA, I can guarantie that you are going to be back on EE because of it.

You best options are  software or hardware proxy firewall

Alternatively - you could use a router to do it - you could only allow access to certain sites (Sabre) or if you have a sophisticated router, you could limit protocol port numbers with an Access Control List.

The ideal way to do it, IMHO, would be a hardware firewall - this is EXACTLY what they are designed to do - restrict access.  You could get a little Checkpoint/Nokia box or a little Pix firewall.

    To: Vico1

As i mentioned, it is a peer to peer network. so there is no server involved in the network.
MS ISA does not apply in this case. I will think about other proxy server products

    Thanks

What's the price range for those routers you mentioned?

I sold many Linksys, Netgear, SMC and Dlink routers, it seems they are not good enough to do what i want.

You can get a basic 2600 series Cisco for about $2G new - around $750 on Ebay.  You could do it with an access control list.
