Of course it depends on whos perspective you're looking from.
Popular to whom?
If you're a game freak then obviously the gaming software will be more popular, if you're a security freak and paranoid that there's a hacker trying to root your box then ad-ware, firewall and anti-virus software will be more popular, if you're a sound engineer or a multimedia enthusiast then of course the programs such as divX, WinDVD, Winamp, etc., will be more popular.
It seems to me you're asking a personal opinion - mine? I'd choose the audio/video software as more popular with me as most of it is small (games sometimes are gigabytes big), easy to use (ever tried to fully configure a firewall correctly when you don't know what you're doing?), actually usefull (i.e., you can make use of it everyday unlike ad-aware or spybot which you may use to scan once a week), good value for money (a number of DVD backup programs can save you moeny if your originals fail or get damaged) and of course high quality DivX rips will take less room up on your hard drive rather than backing up WHOLE DVDs.
You really need to broaden the question though.
