searching free network storage OS

This is a specific question:

I've seen an article in a PC-magazin, but i didn't found/knew the magazin after reading - anyhow long i search... so i'll have to ask you, if you know this software/OS

The article described an OperatingSystem, that is only designed for the task to serve as a NetworkStorage ... it should even be possible to use big 100GB harddisks with old 486 pre-pentium PCs, because the OS should handle the harddisk system with internal means... did i mention, that this software was free?

And just as i wanted to set things up, that magazin disappeared ;-(

Any idea?

The answer is Linux.

There are many different linux distributions available. If you are not very familiar with linux http://www.linux.org is a good starting point. You may find more information here including where to download linux as well as information on various linux distributions.

these are nice articles, that are very close to the one I search.. but my searched one is FREE and and downloadable (your links provide no software) and is a software that can be installed on very old PCs ... I have many old 486 that would nicely fit ;-)
Just looked at the www.darma.com website... there is a free trial download ... but it fits only for 2 SMB-connections per share, so i can't use it in a classroom

yeah i know... and i know linux... but i just wanted THIS i read about.  Linux also can't fit 100GB Harddisk onto old PCs and it has so many features i don't need

i'm sure you could find a version of linux that would do that.. won't it format it in NTFS and wouldnt that work? just speculation, i havent tried anything like that

i accept sys38892's answer (though it's not really the one i searched for - and therefor the 'B'), but i found some nice hints about distributions there... and i will set up a linux server in the near future.
