Question

Internet not working

Asked by: lumber21

I lost my internet, but it is there somehow. My peer2peer program downloads and uploads files just fine. But anything else requiring internet does not work(email, IE).
I tried ipconfig release/renew
I can ping myself but not my router or my other computer on the network, nor the DNS server. I get a "general failure"
I have a home network with only two comuters on a Linksys Router and DSL Modem. Running windows XP SP1a.

I recently put Mcafee AntiVirus on it but without a firewall installed, my windows firewall is disabled as well.

It souds to me like your DNS configuration is wrong, go into network connections, find properties for your current connection, then properties of the TCP\IP and the doble check the dns server values with the ones your ISP gives you.

First make sure you can access internet fine from the other computer. That would tell that your router and cable connection are all working fine..

You may want to stop the p2p program for the moment or until the issue is resolved .. If you cannot ping outside websites, I doubt if your p2p is actually working fine..

As steve said post the ipconfig info and also post what happens when you ping websites like www.google.com.

You may want to restart the computer and see if you can get ip address fine ..

Hmmm, that's one I haven't seen before
can it
 ping 127.0.0.1
how about it's own ip?
example
ping 192.168.0.3
what firewall/anti virus is installed on this?

sunray, I've seen a lot of error messages from ping, but not "general failure"
how generic LOL
would be nice for a more descriptive message

Hmmm, seems like the WMI might have something to do with the error message

and
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/wmisdk/wmi/win32_pingstatus.asp
wonder if something has replaced the standard ping.exe with a third party one

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-06 at 17:36:52ID: 12760149

I gave a static IP and rebooted but still nothing. The settings remained the same after reboot.

I can ping my own IP just fine
I can ping 127.0.0.1
I attempted ping on 192.168.0.5 and recieved 1 but usually none. That is my networked computer.

I have McaFee Antivirus, but firewall isn't installed on it. My windows firewall is disabled. I also run BlackIce PC Protection if that helps(been installed a month but never had internet problems with it). Other than that I dont have any other firewall programs(that I know of)

A little history.....I have had problems getting online with this computer before but I always rebooted and/or turned DSL modem off and back on to get it working. Eventually I just started renewing ipconfig instead of rebooting to get it working. But now I have nothing, It has always been strange to me and I wonder if it is the DSL modem?  I never had any problem with this when I had a cable modem, I don't have that option where I live now. Could this be part of the problem?

Here is my IPCONFIG with last pings taken:

I wud try to troubleshoot this issue with mcafee and blackice temporarily turned off first.

If your DSL modem is at fault, your other computer wud not be working either.
I wud also first bypass the router and then connect the computer directly to the cable modem and check how it goes

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-06 at 17:58:45ID: 12760251

Oh boy, now I have another issue....... I turned of blackice and mcafee. Then release ip, but will not renew and I get this message:

The operation failed as no adapter in this state permissable for this operation.

I this because I set IP DNS manually? Should I change it back to auto?

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-06 at 18:02:37ID: 12760263

>>The operation failed as no adapter in this state permissable for this operation
that's because you are using static ip
set it to auto and it will do the release/renew

by: dazer1virginiaPosted on 2004-12-06 at 21:33:58ID: 12761094

I'd try a different NIC in the machine and see what you get.  The one you have is not receiving any packets in.  Pinging the loopback and its own IP just means that TCP/IP is installed properly.  Have you tried a different NIC?

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-07 at 01:54:11ID: 12762123

Not sure what a NIC is..........

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-07 at 03:01:13ID: 12762447

NIC = network interface card (the network adapter) that the ethernet cable plugs into

by: thallerPosted on 2004-12-07 at 07:31:03ID: 12764741

Reset the TCP/IP stack.  Run "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" from a command prompt.  This will restore the stack to it's post-OS installation state.

by: stevericePosted on 2004-12-08 at 05:01:22ID: 12772803

hey - just a small point, but is the DNS server running? If it isn't it would explain why you can get you p2p stuff (they generally use IP addresses and not domain names) and why you're not getting web browsing and mail - which generally do use domain names.

It would also explain why it doesn't respond to a ping.

Has your ISP changed its DNS server address?

Steve

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-08 at 06:11:36ID: 12773335

DNS server has  not changed, how do I check to see if it is running?

I reset the TCP/IP Stack but nothing...

Haven't tried a NIC yet, but looking like I may be.

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-08 at 06:19:27ID: 12773402

can you ping the dns server(s)?

by: stevericePosted on 2004-12-08 at 06:19:45ID: 12773405

1 - ask your ISP, see if they have an alternate DNS server you could point at
2 - Can you ping any other addresses on the internet. Try 216.239.63.104, this is one of Google's addresses and it should reply to a ping. (I can't try it from where I am at the moment because I'm behind a firewall that blocks ping traffic). If you get a reply, then it points more to the DNS server
3 - Just a final thought, your HOSTS file hasn't been corrupted in any way has it?
Steve

by: stevericePosted on 2004-12-08 at 06:21:50ID: 12773427

stevenlewis:

Lumbar21 can't get a ping respnse from his DNS server (see the message dated 12/6)

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-09 at 13:19:13ID: 12787531

216.239.63.104 doesn't ping    "general failure"

How do I see if my HOSTS file has been corupted?  I can ping the DNS from my other networked coputer just fine, as far as contacting my ISP......do I really have to talk to those idiots? They have never been of any help.

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-09 at 16:01:39ID: 12788838

That ping "general failure" is strange
try sfc /acannow
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310747&Product=winxp

your hosts file is located in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
I don't think this is an issue with your provider
I think there is a problem with your tcp stack (or NIC)
More inclined to think it's the NIC
swap it out

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-12 at 13:45:11ID: 12805279

Changed the NIC, same problem.....

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-12 at 15:25:59ID: 12805608

I also ran sfc scan and it did it's thing but didn't help with the problem.  This is driving me nuts now, am I looking at a clean install?

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-12 at 15:40:32ID: 12805647

Applied winsock fix and wanted to reboot, but it showed a message "file not found" and something about error code 53. after rooboot I had nothing then applied again, my home page worked after reboot but couldn't go anywhere else. And It "seemed" to be loading from the internet and not just a saved page.  Could not ping my DNS, and ipconfig /renew didn't work for it.  I rebooted and now back to where I was to begin with.

by: lumber21Posted on 2004-12-29 at 08:36:42ID: 12920014

Is their anything else I can try?   I reinstalled windows(without formatting) and internet worked. But a few days later this problem is back.

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-29 at 08:41:17ID: 12920049

let's start from the beginning
from a prompt type
ipcopnfig /all and post
back to using the p2p software?
probably getting infected

by: lumber21Posted on 2005-01-18 at 16:44:01ID: 13078619

I ended up formatting my HD and reinstalling windows. p2p software back on and everything is working just dandy now. thanks for all your help with the issue, I wish I knew what was causing it. Points given to stevenlewis for his persistance in helping with this issue. But do appreciate all the help from the rest of you guys and gals.
