Question

How to set my IP Address to 10.10.10.10 when I am offline.

Asked by: avi9260

Hello all,
I need an advise for how to set my ip address to 10.10.10.10 whe I am working offline.
I guess it is quite simple for some of you, but when I set "Use the following IP Address" to 10.10.10.10 in the TCP/IP properties, I still pinging the IP 127.0.0.1.
It would be nice to know how do I set the IP address to 10.10.10.10 when I am online in domain, that the addresses goes from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.256.

Thanks in advanced

You can *always* ping 127.0.0.1, if TCP/IP is working.  Depending on your OS, type IPCONFIG at a CMD prompt to see your current IP address.  If you manually set the IP address to 10.10.10.10, that is what it will use, but 127.0.0.1 will  still repond to a ping.

Depends on your O/S.  But get to the network adapter properties, then TCP/IP and you will find a radio button to "Use specified IP" type in your desired address (only on one PC-it must be unique) and set your subnets to the same (usually 255.0.0.0 for a class A) It is now bound to that address

Sorry, its a bit unclear what you want to do...

Is your domain Ip in the 10.0.0.0 network?  or is it in the 192.168.1.0 network?

127.0.0.1 is the loopback address, or in lamens terms, its the address in your network card in your PC..  so you will always be able to ping that...   If you are working in a domain, and your IP is set up in the same network address as the server, you should be able to ping the server's address as well giving you connectivity....

Give us a few more details and might be able to help more specifically..

You could probably edit your "HOSTS" File to have the following setting:

10.10.10.10                    localhost

by: periferralPosted on 2004-12-09 at 17:20:03ID: 12789172

You will always ping 127.0.0.X because that IP is localhost. Unless you disable TCP/IP completely, there is no way to avoid pinging yourself. Doesn't matter what IP you configure on the machine.

by: stevenlewisPosted on 2004-12-09 at 18:09:41ID: 12789364

127.0.0.1 is the loopback adapter, and is used to test the tcp stack, you shuld always be able to ping it
but it sounds like your network is using dhcp
try (if using xp) the alternate connection feature

by: benstoreyPosted on 2004-12-09 at 21:58:04ID: 12790101

Offline mode...   I think you have 1 or 2 things confused...

An IP address can be set onto a computer in one of 2 ways... you can either set it to ONE address, and it will always be that address, you set that by selecting 'use the following ip address' and then inputing the address...    or you can set it by using DHCP which will give you an address automatically from the server, as long as the server is set up...

It is still unclear why you need an address for 'offline mode' whatever you would class that as.. (not connected to network?  not online?) in which case you dont need an IP anyway...

If we understand what you want more clearly, we can help you in a much better way...

are you using a laptop that you want to move from network to network, and one has internet, and the other doesnt? is that offline mode?

Just trying to help...
Ben

Not clear by offline mode. If you mean you dont have access to any network, your best option is to disable your adapter. This way you will not see any IP address. If you adapter is active and you have a static IP assigned, it will be able to ping 127.0.0.1 since you will always be able to ping loopback.

When you say "offline" i am assuming that you are not connected to your network or your domain. In your TCP/IP settings you can bind more than on IP address to your NIC. Can you please be more specific when you talk about "offline" and what you are trying to accomplish.

Regards

I think I know what you are saying now.  You have two networks that you "visit" and you want to set static addresses on your adapter.  If so, you can use a utility like IP Switcher (http://www.pcnet-online.com/downloads/ipswitcherbasic.htm) to coonect to each network.  When you are not connected to either network, you can use the offline folders feature of Windows XP to use the network files while you are not connected.  Beyond that I think you might need to have a professional help you out.

Hi Guyes,
I am sorry if the question was unclear or presented on a foggy matter. I geuss this is because I am not an expert in network issues and the usage of this specific address was unclear as well.So I will try once again, (and as you can see,the new point value was set to 500, please accept it as apologize).Any how, there are 2 parts on my question:
I got an evaluation license for a web product we are working with. The licensing method is per IP address, which means that the product can be installed only on a specific IP address. When we asked for an evaluation license the vendor gave us a general license file for the ip 10.10.10.10.
I want to install the product on the laptop of our sales manager,so that it will be no problem for him to demonstrate the product while he traveling around and has no connection to any network ( offline mode). I have tried explicitly  to set the IP address to 10.10.10.10 on his laptop via the TCP/IP properties -->  and selecting "Use the following IP Address" option ,but when I install the product I got an error message about an invalid ip address for the license. when I use ping or ipconfig I got the 127.0.0.1 address while I expected to get 10.10.10.10. is it impossible to do it ?

The second part of the question is refering to an installation in online mode. When the sales manager connect to the domain in our small office, he got the address 192.168.1.22. (The adresses is in type of 192.168.1.*)
I succeeded to change his IP to 10.10.10.10 (via TCP/IP properties) and to install the software, but unfourtunately, he was unable to acess to any network resources, I guess this is because I should had to define a new scope in the DHCP or perhaps new zone in DNS.

The optimal solution for me is to define a permanent address (10.10.10.10) that would allow him to work with all the network resources when he connect to our domain  and to allow him to use this software in online and offline mode.
Thats it, I hope that the issue is clear enugth now (otherwise I am giving up)

Thanks in advanced
Avi

>>I succeeded to change his IP to 10.10.10.10 (via TCP/IP properties) and to install the software, but unfourtunately, he was unable to acess to any network resources
that's because your network uses a different range (192.168.1.x)
again, check out xp's alternat connection
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283676&Product=winxp

>>I want to install the product on the laptop of our sales manager,so that it will be no problem for him to demonstrate the product while he traveling around and has no connection to any network ( offline mode)
you will have to disable the media disconnect sensing feature
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q239924
you then should be able to assing the 10.10.10 ip that you need

by: periferralPosted on 2004-12-11 at 13:39:03ID: 12801444

Avi, not clear why you static IP address doesnt stick.
On TCP/IP Properities, you should be able to set an IP address and hit OK. Once you do this, ipconfig should show you the IP address 10.10.10.10. If this doesnt happen, I am at a loss as to why this is happening.

Now if you want the IP to be 10.10.10.10 all the time, you could assign that IP to a MAC on you DHCP server or just use static IP 10.10.10.10. However, if your network is 192.168.X.X, then routing from this machine will be a problem. The solution would be to have a router seperating this machine.

PC - router - 192.168.Network

Now the PC can be 10.10.10.10, the router will have 1 interface in the 10.10.10.10 network and the other in 192.168.X.X network. If you choose to run DHCP, you can run IP helper on the router and this will relay DHCP packets to your DHCP server.

If you dont want to use a router, you could try just use static routes on the PC. This may work, but you could run into problems since its not a clean solution.

Hope this helps.

When your computer has no cable attached, your network is unavailable, you can disable dhcp media sense so your network card will remain active:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239924

Also you can give your client multiple ip adresses at once in the advanced section of your ip settings, just give your manager a ip adress of 192.168.1.xxx and 10.10.10.10

Also you should considder VMware workstation for demonstration purposes, modern laptops are fast enough and this way you could simulate a client and a server at the same time
