Question

Setting up an internet connection via a wireless LAN

Asked by: Supernumbers123

I have a wireless LAN with a working internet connection on one desktop PC. I have installed a wireless card in a laptop and have network access to shares etc. both ways.  I now want to connect to the internet from the laptop using the broadband connection on the desktop. Under network connections I have a working internet gateway on the laptop.  Both PC's have Widows XP.

Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to set up an internet connection via the LAN?

Thanks.

Thanks systmprog for your links but I already have the wireless LAN set up and working I just cannot connect to the internet.

When I click on the internet explorer icon I get "This page cannot be displayed". This is probably because I do not have any account set up on the laptop. The Desktop works fine.

I am not sure what I need to put into the IE, tools, connections tab as it is all blank. Do I enter my ISP's details or LAN details or what? Is it just the connections tab I need to enter details into?

Thanks

Check this :-

goto Start Menu - Control Panel - Network Connections - and then select connection and goto Properties of the connection from there select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties :-

you have two options here :-

obtain an IP address automatically
use the following IP address

which one is selected there ?

by: Supernumbers123Posted on 2004-12-31 at 03:56:19ID: 12932226

"Use an IP address automatically" is selected.

But I have file & print sharing working so my wireless connection is all ok. I just need to know how to configure Internet Explorer.

my 2 cents!

You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on your desktop and use the same IE setting in your desktop. In otherwords: you need to share the link to your ISP from your desktop with your laptop!

To enable the ICS, right click on my network places -> slect properties. From the properties winodw right click on the connetion to your ISP -> slect properties -> select the advace tap and tick the Internet Connection sharing.

Check the IE settings in your desktop and put the same in the settings in your Laptop Or alternatively you can tick the IE to auto detect settings.

Have fun

he has already enabled ICS that's why he got 192.168.1.2

by: Supernumbers123Posted on 2004-12-31 at 04:30:00ID: 12932336

Thanks but....

I have ICS on the desktop PC for sure. My laptop does not have any internet connections set up - that is what I am asking for help on. I have selected "Add" and it only gives me the following options:

Dial up to private network (via modem)
Connect to a private network through the internet (VPN)
connect directly to another computer (for serial / parallel connection)
connect to the internet via broadband (the laptop does not have broadband)

None of these are relevant or work (I have tried them all)

Under "view network connections" I have an internet gateway connected and working. I just need to be able to use it via my IE icon - how do I do this?

by: Supernumbers123Posted on 2004-12-31 at 04:53:38ID: 12932387

Router is connected to Desktop, laptop has wireless 54g card. Everything (WLAN, Internet connection on desktop etc.) works perfectly except internet connection from laptop.

All 3 boxes are ticked under ICS

by: holger12345Posted on 2004-12-31 at 05:20:55ID: 12932460

pls follow my advice to manually assign DNS (and you need default gateway too)... from your post i see, that your laptop has neither of them assigned

you'll probably need to configure:
Default Gateway  . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1  (the LAN IP of your ICS pc)
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . : 194.74.65.86 (these are the DNS entries equally to the ICS pc)
                                       194.72.9.55

regards Holger

3 boxes ?

ok can you ping ur desktop using Ping 192.168.1.1 from ur laptop

goto command prompt to issue this command.

by: Supernumbers123Posted on 2004-12-31 at 05:24:52ID: 12932475

holger - please provide more detail - ms networks are not my thing - step by step plse. Thanks.

by: Supernumbers123Posted on 2004-12-31 at 05:26:58ID: 12932479

sysmprog

All LAN connections are fine - if I can share folders and printers either way I am sure I can ping 2 ways.

by: holger12345Posted on 2004-12-31 at 05:31:39ID: 12932493

- right click network
- click properties
- right-click LAN connection (or does it say WLAN?)
- click TCP-IP -> properties
there you are to set the IP adresses, default gateway, dns entries manually

use the config and set it manually:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway  . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1  (the LAN IP of your ICS pc)
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . : 194.74.65.86 (these are the DNS entries equally to the ICS pc)
                                       194.72.9.55

check the connection... if it works - bingo
Holger
