The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Receiving DHCP address but can't ping anything

I have an IBM Thinkpad A20M with Windows 98 SE that Im working on right now. I just replaced the motherboard, but this problem started right before the motherboard died. I can receive a DHCP address fine, but thats it. I can't ping to or from the laptop, running NMAP from another machine says the host is turned off. There is no firewall installed that I can find. I have completely removed and reinstalled all networking components, installed freshly downloaded NIC drivers, tried a different NIC, ran SFC, and reinstalled windows(not a fresh install). The only time I can see any activity is while the laptop is booting up I can get about 5 replys pinging from another machine, then it stops. I can ping loopback and my local IP number(192.168.1.59). I tried "route print" and the routing table looks exactly the same as my other machine that is working fine,  except for the IP address of course. I did find some spyware installed, but I've removed it all(593 total items removed with Ad-Aware and about another 200 removed with Spybot). Running BluesPortScan locally finds port 139-Netbios-ssn open. I have no idea what to try next other than fdisk->reinstall, which I would really like to avoid if possible.
