Browse All TopicsI have a domain for which I would like to route e-mail through a different server to that which the web site is hosted.
I understand I can do this by setting up an MX record but am unsure how to do this. My ISP provides a custom DNS service but will not support anything that involves servers they do not have any control over.
When setting up the MX record i have to provide a prefix, TTL, distance and value. The TTL will be 86400 and the distance will be 5 but what should the others be? I assume they are references to the other mail server but I do not know what to put in those boxes.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

You need to tell them you are providing a the fully qualified name for use as a MX record for your domain. Unless you are doing something unique, take the defaults on TTL, distance , and value.
Provide them:
mail.mydomain.com xx.xx.xx.xx ----xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP of your mail server,
thats it
