Question

Something wrong with ipconfig and winipcfg in my Windows XP ... advise needed

Asked by: shchong2

Hi Experts,

I'm using Windows XP Profesional. Recently, I noticed that :-

#1# In cmd prompt, when I typed ipconfig, it cannot show the ip address at all

      c:\> ipconfig

     Windows IP Configuration

     c:\> ipconfig/all

     Windows IP Configuration

        Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : schong
        Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . :
        Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
        IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes

#2#  When I type winipcfg (either in command prompt or in start-->run)

     C:\>winipcfg

'winipcfg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
     operable program or batch file.

I'm connecting to ADSL thru USB Prolink wireless adaptor, to my home wireless router

[desktop] <--> [USD wireless adaptor] <---> [wireless router] <---> [ADSL modem] <---> [phoneline]

I can still serve the net without any problems :-
e.g. : I can still :-
1) update anti virus patterns
2) connect to WWW
3) download from http, ftp
4) etc ...

However, when I open my Window Media Player 10, trying to do "check For Player Updates", I cannot perform update, as it complaint saying :

An unexpected error has occurred. Setup was not able to detect any Windows Media updates. Please try again later.

I can't recall what has been done corrupting it.
Can experts pls kindly help me to root cause the problem, and provide a solution to it.

Thank you very much in advanced. :)

Best Regards,
shchong2

Looks like you need to uninstall your network drivers, reboot, and reinstall them.
Make sure you have the correct version.

Winipcfg doesn't exist under Windows XP.

First thing I would do is to take the wifi out of the mix.  If you can, plug your system directly into your wifi router and see if the same thing occurs.

(Reinstalling NIC and using Winsockfix are also good, as noted above..)

First, Winipcfg is NOT included on windows XP.

A better tool could be used if you go to Network Connections, double click your wireless connection (or the connection you are using), properties, and enable "Show icon in notification area". Ok, Close.

Now, you have two screens at the bottom right, near the clock. It flashes with activity.

At any time, double click it and select the "Support" tab. Is almost the same winipcfg functionality.

I have not an answer of why it didn't show you more information with ipconfig /all, but I wish this is useful.

Good luck,

ipconfig does that when it doesn't find the network card. It just sits there showing what it found : nothing.

Yes, but seems he is using a wireless card that is working... maybe due to the USB wireless driver implementation?

Ups... wireless usb adapter

Unistall the drivers of the NIC is the way I would go as stated above, another quick thing would be to disable the network card then enable it. Sometimes that will fix the problem.

winipcgf isn't for winxp.  I agree with jltari, to reinstall the network drivers.

You might want to just to go the microsoft website to dl windows media player 10

sorry for the late response. Was reasonly busy with work, and don't even have time turning on my desktop.
Yep, as easy as uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Don't know why it was corrupted, but once reinstalling it's fine now.
Thanks.
