The best way to start is to attend networking basics courses first and then get some hands-on experience.
If you short on the budget, buy some networking essentials books (try Amazon.com or local shops), get 2 x PC's wired into the LAN, get second use switch and couple of routers, you can buy all this stuff for $1 - $1,5K but these expences will help you to get a job in the future. 3 monthes should be enough for this ... if you looking for free CBT manuals you can try Emule or Edonkey but this is illegal by the way :)

It is essential that you start with the basics... and I would suggest to know IPv4 inside and out as it's here with us for another 25 years by some analysts estimates.

Here is THE book that did it for me and also allowed me to pass the Cisco entry-level CCNA exam:

I can highly recommend CBT Nuggets, www.cbtnuggets.com for all encompassing coverage of the subjects you are looking at.  3 months is a short time to get up on a subject as vast as computers and networks are.

OK, my suggest is to get the nuggets and you have to start from the beginning.  Start with A+ which covers the hardware basics as well as the OS.  Then do Network+.  That will cover your basic networking and your basic TCP/IP.  I would not even suggest you look at CCNA, MCSA or anything else until you get the basics down.  You could then go to say, XP Professional or Server 2003 to further expand your knowledge.

Get a few PC's and use them as your test environment.  If you are limited on PC's try VMWare's Workstation for creating a simulated network on a single PC. (Have lots of ram for this).

Even if you are not an expert by then, you will have shown that you now have the basic knowledge and skills, you are dedicated to expanding on that and you have the potential.

I agree with samccarthy that CCNA might be a little too advanced...  I only meant THE BOOK stated above for learning IPv4.  That's only the first 2 or 3 chapters if I remember correctly.  It's really basic stuff.  After you've read that, you will understand TCP/IP and can move on to other basic stuff.

Once you feel you are ready for Cisco stuff, then go back to the Lammle book and finish it up.  But your 3 months will be over by then.

All you have to do is log on to their site and download whatever you purchased.  If it is not listed as it was awhile since you purchased them, just shoot an email and they will take care of you.  I've had to do that before.  Their new versions require "activation" and I don't know how many machines each person can activate, however sharing copies with someone else would be in violation of their license agreements.  You are far better off downloading new copies and having your activation count start at zero.
