The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Wireless Networking

You can see the map of my house at http://www.scaria.info/network.jpg.

I can access my neighbor's Belkin wireless router from Room A from my laptop using a Netgear 54g wireless notebook card.  The signal can vary from 1 bar to 3 bars at any given time.  The speeds go from 1 Mbps to 36 Mbps.  The laptop also has a 10/100 LAN card.  For the most part, the laptop stays in this room.

In room E, I have a desktop computer (red box), with a built in 10/100 LAN.

In room F, I have another desktop (red box) with  a Netgear 10/100 LAN card and a Motorola wireless 54g PCI card.  The Motorola card does not see my neighbor's network and only get good signal (36 Mbps +, 3 bars +) from my Netgear 54g wireless router if it is within 5 ft.  Otherwise is gets usually one bar and the signal is really weak.

Also, in the room below room I, I'm thinking of getting another laptop with a built in wireless card.

I also have a  PCI 10/100 LAN card that I am willing to use if necessary.

My problem is that I can only access the wireless signal from my neighbor in Room A.  I want to amplify that signal to the rest of my house, but I don't want to run CAT5 cables around my house unless its less then 25 ft.  I also don't want to spend a lot of money on more wireless equipment.  I am willing to switch PCI cards, etc. from computer to computer to do this.

Is there a way, if I purchase another router to modify the firmware to act like a bridge?  If so, what brand will be the best fit to work with all my components.  Also, how would a bridge help my situation and how is to be setup?  How will new wireless equipment help my situation?  How is it to be setup?

Thanks for all your help in advance.  I really appreciate it.
