The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Install an Operating System via Recovery CDs from a REMOTE machine..

I have a Laptop here (Sony VAIO PCG-R600MX), which has a major hard drive failure. (Nothing possible to recover)

The laptop has no floopy drive, no CD-Rom that is built in, and I don't have a docking station for it.
I want to install the correct OS on it (the OS that came on the recovery CDs), which happens to be WIN XP Home Edition (not SP2)
My previous attempts to use a converter (2.5 -> 3.5) and install the CD's like that failed (because the CD's are machine specific and protected against installing on other machines)

Next up my attempt to install WIN XP using the same method (failed as I only have the upgrade disk)

Next: attempted to install WIN 98 (Kinda Worked, the OS installed, but hardly anything worked, No USB, Active area of the monitor was reduced to using a small square half the size of the monitor itself, leaving the mouse thinking it had the full use of the screen, nearly impossible to use the mouse)

Next attempt: Installing Linux (Again..... kinda worked, but this time I failed, as I have almost zero understanding of Linux and coudn't do much with it), also screen had similar resolution trouble.

Next attempt: Boot Via Network
*this is where I am up to now*
At this point I thought I had finally done it.... the DHCP found both an IP address and some form of client install system.... Only problem was, it was installing the Server 2003 OS from the server it was connected to.

I now have a Laptop that is working (screen resolution now fixed), but with Win 2003 OS installed on it, and that means most of the laptop specific utilities aren't installed..... I have searched the Recovery CDs and found the utilities, of which some install, and some don't........ The power management systems don't install, neither does the hotkey utility and some other stuff (means if I close the lid of the laptop, Win 2003 server shuts down (instead of going into hibernate).... and that is annoying)

Does anyone know of anything that I haven't tried that would allow me to install the recovery CDs for the laptop via the network?
The reason I can't install the CD's Directly from it's current OS is that the CDs are .IMG format......... which is as much use to me as a paper fish tank.
I have already been using trial versions of "EmBoot Network Boot Tools" Ver 1.2, "Symantec Ghost 8.2", but unless I have missed something from these application I am assuming that they don't allow me to do what I want to......

(This isn't urgent, but I think it's dammed difficult.......) 400pts
