Hi cgillet,
sciwriter is absolutely correct - you can't have a phone conversation at the same time as sending/recieving a fax on the same line.
If you need to be receiving faxes while you're on the phone, you either need another line or you need to look into some sort of fax to email service.
With these services, people send a fax to a dedicated fax number for you, provided by the service provider. The service provider will then email the fax to you as an image.
For example - www.efax.com

2 different things here -- DSL vs. voice/data -- and voice vs. data.
The first is already solved by DSL. The frequency modulation of DSL is WAY WAY above voice transmittance so both voice and faxing can go on concurrently with full DSL access -- that is built into the design of DSL.
But as for talking and faxing at the same time -- it is NOT possible, because they use the same frequency modulation as each other -- no planning to keep the data stream separate, as in DSL.
There are programs which can put the voice call on hold while a fax comes in, just like there is PC software to put the dial-up on hold while a call comes in -- but you have to be running PC fax software to do it, and it is NOT satisfactory.
What you need to get is a switch box that will detect an incoming fax signal and transfer it to "line 2" the fax line, coming out of the box. This is an automatic fax rerouting servvice. But NO, there is no way to talk and fax at the same time, not possible with today's POTS technology, on the same incoming line.
