DHCP not working

Like the title says, the computer will not automatically obtain an IP and DNS etc. via DHCP.  The network card is good because I can manually enter the IP, subnet mask, gateway and DNS values and it works.  I have tried the winsock repair, looked for Norton leftovers in the registry, scanned for virus and spyware, reinstalled SP2, tried a known good NIC, checked LSP entries all to no avail.  DHCP just doesn't work.

OS is XP Pro SP2
P4 2.4

What happens if you try releasing and renewing ip?

goto command prompt..
type..

ipconfig /release

and

ipconfig /renew

Also, if you have another computer on the network, is dhcp working for them? (in other words, do we know for sure your router is working ok? (im assuming this is a home network? or am i wrong? you didnt say.)

If other computers aren't receiving dhcp info either, you could do a quick check on your router dhcp settings.

Sorry i'm not really sure what to say, could use more info...

Cannot release or renew.  When set for dynamic IP it gets assigned the 169..etc default IP.  I only have connection with static IP.  2 other computers get dynamic IPs via DHCP on my network.  All computers attached to linksys router.  Changing cables or positions on the router has no effect.  What kind ogf info?
hmm
this is probably trivial, but your dhcp lease range consists of more than just 2 IPs right? hehe
just checking~
ana probably haven't been playing with mac address right?
no duplicates?
Hi JohnnyCanuck,

Also check this
go to start > run > services.msc
go to "DHCP client" and see that service is started ..

Did you do any changes to the machine after which this issue started ?

SR..
hmm, not sure what else to try

if above stuff is all good, you could then...

Reset TCP/IP (for win xp), type in command prompt..
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Upgrade NIC drivers? (ive heard onboard nic's sometimes have problems like this)

try a new NIC.
Is the dhcp client computer a Fujitsu-Siemens machine?
If so, first power down and DISCONNECT from power source.
Wait about 30 sec.
Finaly connect power and turn on.
No expired lease.  No MAC funny business.  DHCP is started.  Did the netsh thing.  Not Fujitsu-Siemens.  Machine was returned from manufacturer (under warranty) after having mobo replaced.  Manufacturer did repair install.

turn off any firewall you have running. including microsoft internet connection firewall. try it then.
Check out the advanced properties of the Network Adapter, see if media type or speed values have been hard coded, instead of aollowing it to autonegotiate. Pay attention to the Duplex mode also.
If you connected to a switch use full duplex, hub then half duplex.

Also make sure TCP/IP filtering is turned off under the advanced properties of TCP/IP.

Finally, just replace the patch cable you are using to eliminate it.

I didn't think of the Knoppix CD, but when I tried it, it worked, so its definately a windows problem.  I've spent about 4-5 hours trying to straighten this out and thats enough.  Its just not worth it to spend any more time on this so its formattin' time.  Points to natcom for suggesting the Knoppix.
thanks for the points
