Question

File sharing user access problem=Logon failure: user not granted requested logon type at this computer

Asked by: JeremyBamford

I have a small office network setup. I am trying to add a new machine/user to the group. I have added them and can see them on the network. The user can access other computers share files and folders on the network. However the server, or other users, can not access this machine's share files and folders. When trying to access it I get the following error message:

\\lm-laptop is not accesible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I have checks all the security settings and firewalls have been disabled. The security settings have been set to the same as the other user machines on the network. Its probably some new windows security setting that is restricting access to this machine, lm-laptop. However I can not figure it out and need help.

Thanks,
Jeremy

There is a local policy setting that determines who can connect to the computer from the network. If the person hasn't been granted rights thru this policy then they will get this error message.

Do the following:

Go to Start- run- type: gpedit.msc

Then go to:

computer config- windows settings- security settings- local policies- user rights assignment- access this comptuer from the network

Make sure the users you want to logon have been granted permisson here to do so

A good start would be to know what OS you are using on all the computers (I assume XP). Also whether or not the new computer is part of the network place (MSHOME....OFFICE...ect.). Are you trying to share specific folders? If the new computer can access files off from other computers on the network it does not sound like a firewall problem on any of your routers. I think a little more info would be very helpful.

Tried this.....located the users to add....when to apply (save) changes and got the following error message:

Failed to save Local Policy Database.

Please advise.

Open up 'My Computer' go to 'Tools -- Folder Options' his the second tab from the left, should be labeled 'View' use the scroll bar to scroll to the very bottom, the last check box should say 'Use simple file sharing'

Be aware this option is not available in XP Home, only in Pro. If your using XP Home the issue is with something else. That we'll have to figure out, but try this first.

Bring up the group policy like luv2smile suggested then add "Everyone" under Users Rights Assignment (Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies)

Lomi.....thanks.

I added "everyone" and "network" to the allow access to network users policy. However I also noticed on the Deny access to network users, was listed "everyone".......in effect cancelling out whomever I did allow access to.

I have changed these settings and everything works!!! Excellent. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond and help me out on this problem.
Much appreciated!
