Question

Print server does not physically print if a client has more than one LAN connection

Asked by: rgraft

I have a HP Laserjet printer connected to our small corporate peer-to-peer LAN via a very cheap (and nasty!) Edimax single-port print server. This works fine for all network users except any user who has simultaneous wireless (or Bluetooth) and wired connections to the LAN (common for laptop users), thus giving the PC two different IP addreses. In this case any print file sent to the network printer queues just fine but will not physically print until the PC is rebooted.

The workround is of course to disable the wireless LAN connection such that the PC has only one IP address but this only works if done before or immediately after booting.

Can anybody explain why and suggest a better workround such as somehow automatically disabling any wireless (or Bluetooth) LAN connection at boot time when a wired connection already exists?

Hi.
When you have a wireless connection, quite often you don't have a local connectio simultaneously.  If you want to change the order of preference on the machines:
Right-click My Netwrok Places --> Properties
On the file menu, Advanced --> Advanced Settings --> Adapters and Bindings Tab
Move the local adapter up to be first in the list.
Arrange the bindings in the window below, if needed.
Provider Order Tab
Ensure Microsoft Windows Network is on the top of the list
LanMan Printers should be above HTTP printing.

Then, in Network Properties, you can right-click on the wireless Adapter and disable it if you don't need it.

I know I can manually disable the wireless adapter, in fact that's what I do now. The question is how to do it automatically if the wired connection is available, or how to be able to use the print server with both wired and wireless network connections active.

by: gpriceeePosted on 2005-07-21 at 21:47:20ID: 14499659

Did you change the order of preference?
You also can go to Network Poperties.
Double-click the Local Area Connection --> General Tab
Double-click TCP/IP --> Advanced Button
In the Interface Metric dialogue box, enter a 1 if it isn't there.

On the wireless interface cards, enter a 10 or higher in the metric.

If you want to kill the wireless issue altogether, on the wireless router, turn off DHCP, and asigne static addresses.  Or, leave DHCP on, but only allow addresses that are reserved for specific MAC addresses.  Use WEP, but don't install the key on the machines you don't want connected.

by: rgraftPosted on 2005-07-25 at 06:22:50ID: 14517610

I've tried adjusting the metrics before but without success. Tried it again now using the values you suggest but this does nothing to alleviate the problem.

As regards disabling wireless networking completely, either on the laptop or the wireless access point / router, I agree this would fix the problem permanently but unfortunately isn't the answer I want. Most of the day I have my laptop plugged in to he LAN (when I don't want a wireless link as well because of he printing problem) but now and then I want to disconnect the laptop from everything and carry it into our small warehouse and carry on using it wirelessly. In these circumstances I want either:
a) both wired and wireless adapters to work together or separately while not interfering with print capability, or...
b) the wireless adapter to automatically disable/enable itself depending on whether the wired adapter is plugged in or not.

Hi.
Can you make sure both connections are active and then run the following commands:
ipconfig /all
ipconfig /displaydns
nslookup
nbtstat -n

please post the results

Okay.  I think I see the problem.  The machines are using an external DNS server and don't seem to have a WINS server.  The machines are sending NetBT broadcasts to register their names, and the printer share is a WINS share because the machines are using an external DNS server.  So . . . .

Install a WINS server on your server--you might need the CD:
Right-click My Network Places --> Properties --> Advanced Tab
Optional Networking Components
Click Networking Services --> Details Button
Click Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
OK
Next
After the installation finishes--it's very quick, and you don't always need the CD--go to
Start --> All Programs --> Administrative Tools --> WINS
Click the + Next to your server (If your server isn't present, right-click WINS at the top --> Add server)
Right-click Active Registrations --> New Static Mapping...
Enter ROBIN
Under Type, select Multihomed
Enter the IP address 192.168.1.15
OK
Right-click Active Registrations --> New Static Mapping...
Enter ROBIN
Under Type, select Multihomed
Enter the IP address 192.168.1.13
OK
Go to the DHCP server and enter reservations for yout IP address mapped to your MAC address so that the WINS entries don't change.

The problem is that the network has multihomed WINS clients without multihomed entries in a WINS server.  Without a WINS server, the clients simply send broadcasts all over the network.  Once you add a WINS server, the broadcasts are sent to the WINS server and not every node on the network.  The machines broadcast a name-to-address resolution, but it changes upon physical or wireless connection change.  The multihomed entry on a WINS server should clear that up.

Hi.
The addresses are making me think that the address scope is being delivered by two sources.  Do you have a server dishing out DHCP + a Wireless LAN dishing out the DHCP?

Can anyone ping from the wireless connection?

Please ensure you have both connections and then enter the following from a cmd prompt:
netsh diag ping dhcp

Then only have the wireless connection and run the same command.  Please post both.

1. In answer to your comments about a WINS server, I don't have a server to set it up on. This is a peer-to-peer network. All machines are XP Pro or W2K and all connected (via ethernet switches in most cases) to a router.

2. Re DHCP, the following is the output from the suggested "netsh" with wired and wireless adapters connected:

DHCP Servers
     1. [00000001] Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card
        DHCPServer = 192.168.1.1

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
                    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Looks to me alike the router (192.168.1.1) is providing the IP address to both adapters? With only the wireless adapter connected, output is:

     1. [00000001] Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card
        DHCPServer = 192.168.1.1
Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
                Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=2
                Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=2
                Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=2
                Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=1
                Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
                    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
                    Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms

So looks like the router is the only thing supplying IP addresses don't you think? (WAP IP address is 192.168.1.245 and I think I have DHCP disabled on it but, another problem entirely!) I can't get at the admin screens at the moment!

In general, you may well be right about needing a WINS server but I don't know how I go about that. Never understood WINS anyway!!!

Thank you again for your interest and persistence!

Hi.
Try admin admin
Yes, the router is supplying the addresses to both.
I don't know what type of router you have, but if you can assign one scope to the Wireless and another to the LAN, the router will route the traffic between them.

For example, setup the wireless adapter to 192.168.10.1, and set its DHCP scope to 192.168.10.10-192.168.10.how ecer many you need.
Leave the cabled LAN at 192.168.1.1.

The subnet masks for both should be 255.255.255.0.

Renew the lease on the wireless adapters by going to a cmd prompt and entering
ipconfig /renew

The printers are on a cabled LAN or wireless?

Okay.  This seems to be the resolution for sure:
In Network Connections....
1.  Hold Ctrl while clicking both the wireless and LAN connections
2.  Right-click the highlighted connections --> Bridge Connections

That's it!

Now traffic will be allowed from all NICs for the same network.

Too simple . . . it's killing me :-)

Tried bridging before (and again now) but it doesn't work! The wireless adapter is unable to connect to the WAP, and hence the network, at all. Strangely, with the LAN cable unplugged but the wireless adapter active, Windows shows the Bridge as connected (and the wireless card's own icon seems to agree with this) but both the network connections which have been bridged show as disconnected. Network works fine with the LAN cable in but again the wireless adapter shows disconnected whether its active or not, only the bridge varies.

Back to your earlier suggestion, my WAP (Linksys WAP54G) doesn't seem to include a DHCP server. You can only configure its own IP address (default 192.168.1.245) and the gateway address (the router on 192.168.1.1). I tried changing the WAPs IP address to 192.168.10.245 but then found I couldn't ping or get at it to configure it so I ended up doing a factory reset on it and then restoring its settings - too painful!

BTW, if it's any help the router is a Draytek Vigor 2600.

Amazingly this problem has now gone away after months and no known action to fix it! Thanks to those who tried to help and I wish I knew what had happened.

Hi.
While it's working, at the cmd prompt:
ipconfig /all
netsh diag ping dhcp

See if you notice any changes.

Yes (see below) IP Routing is now enabled! What else do you make of this? Any explanation???

It seems that IP routing is not enabled in XP if only LAN connections (wired, wireless, bluetooth) are defined. When a dialup connection is defined as well, IP routing is turned on, which is how my original problem seemed to fix itself.

I have proved this during th setup of another laptop.

Note: IP routing may be manually enabled by setteing registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters/IPEnableRouter to value 1.

Case closed!
