Question

xp, switch & dhcp

Asked by: axrial

Hi, i need this one v urgently.
ok, heres my question,

I have 8 computers (pc1 to pc8), all with windows xp pro sp2 installed, connecting to the internet through a prolink adsl/router modem. they are all connected to a 10mb hub, all comps having assigned dynamic ips through dhcp in the range 10.0.x.x

recently i upgraded my hub to a dlink des-1016d switch, and now only 2 of my computers can assign ips automatically throug dhcp. the other computers are having 169.254.x.x ip range. when i change this manually to the dhcp range it doesnt work. any suggestions?

axrial

ps. i need answer asap

I use a DES-1016D every day at work, the DHCP works great on it and there is no reason a switch causes problems to DHCP.

Which devices is your prolink adsl/router?
Why is your DHCP scope 10.0.X.X instead of a regular 192.168.X.X ?
Did you try getting the IP addressing disabling the Windows XP firewall? (ipconfig /renew)

by: axrialPosted on 2005-09-28 at 08:26:37ID: 14975705

prolink one is my adsl modem, it has router function as well

my adsl modem is also connected to the switch. for some reason my dhcp scope is 10.0.x.x .. i think it is assinged by my modem/router. firewalls disabled, i tried ipconfig /renew too

nothin happens ...

Can you try / check something for me please.

The line from the modem to the new switch is it in the uplink port?

If it is move it to a standard port.

If it isn't move it to the uplink port.

After the move try the

C:\>ipconfig /renew command.

You can set pc3 10.0.X.Y and pc4 10.0.X.Z, with the correct subnet mask, gateway and DNS.
You can find all these information on the DHCP-ok computers : ipconfig /all
You should even see the IP address of the DHCP server (so you should be sure it is you modem/router)

make sure the NICs on all the machines are set to auto detect speed and duplex.

thing is there are 2 or three systems that work with internet connection shared and all, which has the same configuration as the others that dop not work

its so strange ... at least to me ...

by: MarakushPosted on 2005-09-28 at 08:51:42ID: 14975986

Yea that way we can determine the point of failure. If the static address works then your new switch isn't passing the parameters to the PCs when they request it.

well, when i type a ststic ip, isnt that supposed to disable dhcp???

by: ylandrumPosted on 2005-09-28 at 09:12:13ID: 14976212

Device Manager, NIC, Properties, Advanced. Some NICs have a single entry called "Speed & Duplex", others have them listed separately; it just depends on the driver. Since the des-1016d is an unmanaged switch, all the ports are auto-negotiate so the NICs need to match.

You can also get there by opening the properties of the network connection and clicking the Configure... button on the General tab.

axrial -- try the following:

(1)  On one of your computers that is working correctly (with a 10.0.x.y IP), do an "ipconfig /all" and note the DHCP Server value and the value(s) for DNS Servers.

Post those values here.

(2)  On one of your computers that is NOT working correctly, go into the TCP/IP properties  (Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click on Local Area Connection, select Properties, select the "General Tab", highlight TCP/IP, click on "Properties")  and choose "Use the following IP Address".

Set an IP in the same subnet as your "good" computer, but well out of the range of likely IPs likely to be assigned (we do not want a conflict here).  For example, if your "good" computer is 10.0.0.12, then set your "bad" computer's IP to 10.0.0.101.

(3)  At the SAME screen you just used to set the IP address, select   "Use the following DNS Server(s)".

Set the DNS Server addresses to the same values that were shown for the "good" computer.  (If there are more than 2, just use 2 for now -- you can add the rest later on the Advanced tab/DNS)

Reboot the "bad" computer, and see if it is now working okay.

Post the results.

ylandrum , everything is in autodetect mode, even the ones that doesnt work ... !!! what critical infomation am i not giving you here? i feel so helpless!!!

by: dheeruthakurPosted on 2005-09-28 at 12:15:54ID: 14978097

try to reserve any ip in DHCP and assign that ip to specific computer (for which u reserve).

Then check out its working or not. If not, use repair tools. its automatically resolves all the configration. right click on local area connection -> repair.

by: ylandrumPosted on 2005-09-28 at 14:55:52ID: 14979506

OK; let's see if we can narrow this down. Do you have link lights on all the NICs and all the switch ports? Did anything else change besides the switch? On one of the "bad" pcs, can you ping the loopback address ("ping localhost" or "ping 127.0.0.1")?

Try moving one of the "bad" computers into place of one of the "good" ones and plug it in. Does it still not connect? If it connects, then you have a cabling problem, or perhaps a switch port problem. If it does not, then the problem is somewhere in the PC.

by: Alf92130Posted on 2005-09-28 at 17:18:13ID: 14980179

Yes, first check the LED of your NIC and switch. Bad cable shouldn't flash the lights.
Try to plug the computers which can't get IP addresses on another interfaces on the switch.
Then try a "arp -a" command but you shouldn't see that much if there is no communication between the devices.
Is there any filter configured on your router/modem? (Is it a Hurricane 9000?)
When you try again with your old hub, is it working?

by: ndqeePosted on 2005-09-29 at 03:01:31ID: 14982385

Does your switch has VLAN feature? If so, check whether your switch has VLAN configured already.

by: Alf92130Posted on 2005-09-29 at 05:30:37ID: 14982932

No, D-link DES-1016D is unmanaged Layer2 switch.
