Problem connecting to Exchange Server 2003 using Outlook 2003 over a VPN

I am trying to connect to an Exchange Server 2003 over a VPN. The cient is Windows XP SP2.
When I attempt to connect (Send/Recieve) Outlook gives a conncetion error on the recieve part of the process. The error message is
"Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004011D) : 'The server is not available. Contact your administrator  if the condition persists.'"
The VPN is setup using the Linksys QuickVPN client. In the past I have been able to do this without problems. The Linksys router at the client end of the connection failed and was swapped out for another Linksys. The Exchange connection problkem started after this. I cannot see anything in the router setup that is different but who knows.
The VPN connection itself seems fine. I can conncect to file shares etc. I can also ping the Exchange server both with ip address and fully qualified domain name.
No software firewall is running on the client machine.

Any suggestions?

If the Exchange server is on Windows 2003 SP1 and the router you are currently using has an MTU size of less than 1460 bytes you could be having this problem:

Installing security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 may cause network connectivity between clients and servers to fail

We had a simular problem. Just add the following keys in your registry;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0\PPPProtocolType (all hex) value 21
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0\ProtocolMTU with value 514
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0\ProtocolType with value 800
