I've search through the old questions but not sure they really solve my query.
I have a Netgear DG834GT router connected to a 22Mb ADSL2+ line. My network is mainly wired although wireless is enabled. I have two PCs, two Win XP notebooks, a mac and a server running Windows Small Business 2003 which are all connected. This router is DHCP enabled. Current LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1.
Recently, I have experienced problems with my ISP and have suffered from slow speeds and downtime. Also, my ISP does not offer static ip addresses and has blocked a number of ports. I decided to sign up to a second DSL line. This line has just been activated and runs a Netgear DG834G router connected to an 8Mb DSL service and has a static IP address. Current LAN IP address is 192.168.0.11.
I would like to make the 2nd line (8Mb) for the use of the server and for back up in the event of the first line going down. I will then use the first line for general internet usage and downloads and a back up for the server.
What is the best way to configure the routers and my network? Should I allow one of the routers to be DHCP enabled or let the server do that? (Note: server isn't always on as mainly used for a chat feature on my website and soon will do the mail). Both routers have LAN ports and are situated next to each other. Do I connect these with a normal or crossover cable? Is there a way to configure the computers so that in the event of one service being down, it will automatically jump to another? Alternatively, is there a way of creating some sort of shortcut in the event of this happening? What do I need to so to wired computers so they know which router to connect to?
I would prefer not to purchase any new equipment such as the LinkSys dual router as my ISP has forced the purchase of the Netgear DG834GT for the ADSL2+ service.
As I am require a fast resolution, I have awarded maximum points for this question.
Many thanks.
