Software Auditing / License Management Best Practice

I need to find out what software title and version number is installed on every workstation on the network (something similar to BelManage by Belarc) and I need it to allow me to keep track of the licenses etc in the future.

Recommend the best practice / best piece of software to do this please...

AD network, 2k3 servers, wxp sp2 desktops, multiple locations....

We used to use Bindview NETinventory:  http://www.bindview.com/products/NETInv/index.cfm

It will also track hardware configs and changes.

Now we have a home-grown app called PCAudit that does all this for us.
