Question

Wireless Router isn't going to web, but does see other PCs

Asked by: mythology8

=====================================================================================
I have the following set-up:
(2) Dell Desktops (downstairs - 1 w/old drives for storage & 1 I use for business) hard-wired to 4-Port Linksys Router
(1) Linksys WAP serving home hardwired to same router mentioned above and located about 20' from Router to be better located in center of home)
(1) Dell Desktop (upstairs - children's PC) which is using a Linksys PCI Wireless NIC card (type with antenna coming out of the back of the PC)
=====================================================================================
My Home network is set-up as follows:
Workgroup is called: PWPNET
IP's are in uniform order: 192.168.1.11 / 192.168.1.12 / 192.168.1.13 etc.
My subnets and workgroup is uniform throughout network
I have all the same USERS/PASSWORDS on all PCs
All work fine less one mentioned below
=====================================================================================
The problem is this:
I found my children's PC to be extremely slow after having been working fine for almost (1) year. It saw connection and saw other PCs on network but IE took forever to load smallest of sites (tried several - www.yahoo.com, www.msnbc.com etc.). I scanned for viruses (none), spyware (none - if you can believe that LOL) and connectivity (baloon in systray) showed VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT.
I could ping other PCs in my home but would 'time-out' on WWW sites (www.yahoo.com, www.msnbc.com etc.) if I pinged them.
What sites I could get to load w/IE would take forever, if at all.
I decided to reformat; assuming some unknown malware was the culprit.
Upon reformatting with all same settings mentioned above, I can once again see other PCs and WWW but the same issue exists - the 'net takes forever to load, but I can ping and see other PCs on network. It can go wireless from itself to other PCs on network, but won't go out of house w/out doing so at a crawl.
=====================================================================================
I have never used Windows Firewall, instead using the following:
* Norton System Works w/Anti-Virus (but not their Firewall)
* ZoneAlarm Pro (Note: Have not had this running for last few days - for seperate reasons - so I assume this means it is not an issue?)
* Webroot SpySweeper
=====================================================================================
I can appreciate the vastness of this question; but if anyone could tell me where to start looking in order to get this thing connecting to web I'd be very appreciative.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi there,

First of all, Norton System Works is a total system hog and you should not bother with it.

I have a similar setup to you, except I use a Linksys 54g wireless router, but I have some plugged in to the Ethernet ports and some wireless.

Anyhow, we were suffereing poor connectivity on the wireless client mostly because it was in the corner of a room with the antena sitting down on the floor poking out of a metal computer box!  Doesn't do much for signal reception/strength.  SO, we bought an external antena and everything went back to "normal" again.

I know you said you have good/excellent connectivity but I would still recommend you relocate your kids machine as a test to see if it is, indeed, a reception issue.  If so, you can look at external antenae, repeater stations etc.

One other things to thing of are:  changing the wireless channel you are using.

Hi mythology8,

Several tests for you to try:
1) Change wireless channels, in the AP (http://192.168.1.245 with the password "admin" unless you've changed it) at least try the channels 1, 6 and 11. (as mentioned above)
2) In the Advanced wireless settings, try lowering the RTS and Fragmentation tresholds to 2304
3) Try relocating the devices (as mentioned above)
4) Update the firmware on your WAP54G
5) Try setting a static DNS on your wireless computers (Yahoo's DNS servers are available for everyone at 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3)

Greetings,

LucF

Jim,

You may want to uninstall your Zone Alarm or at least disable it from the startup using MSCONFIG, especially if you on see one red bar and three green bars after trying to connect to the internet. I've seen numerous delays connecting to the internet while using multiple versions of this software on my Linksys wireless setup.

Though not as robust as ZA, the bundled version with Windows does a good job especially when sensitive information is not thought to be on the machine, ie child's computer.

Regards.

i also have a similar system. a linksys wireless-g broadband router. some wireless connection and some wired.

if you can ping computers ad not the net, it may be some problem with your IP. have you checked with them??

also, if this is a new system you have set up:

1. go to www.linksys.com/easy
2. download and run the program called NetSet
3. Follow it's instructions

when i got this linksys router, i couldn't connect to the internet either,but could connect to other computers.
this program set it up for me.

hope it works

Because you reformatted and are still experiencing the same issue blocks out alot of possible reasons for your issue. I would test out how your connection reacts to statically inputting your network settings in the connections TCP/IP settings rather than Obtaining an IP Address Automatically. Also, rather than using the original drivers for your nic did you go to the vendors website to see if there is a newer driver version?

I will start off with the simpilest fixes and if they are unsuccessful we could proceed to other options.

Well, the cause may never be known. However, I will agree with "jtarkenton" as to ZoneAlarm.
I replaced my old Linksys Router with a new WirelessG Router and my connection seems great. The PCI NIC being used in the upstairs PC is 'G' and, like I said the old router I was using downstairs was quite old (say two years at least).
I admit my ignorance, but I will agree that ZoneAlarm is a culprit that I'm starting to realize as we drudge this issue.
So.. thanks to all and KUDOS to JTARKENTON!
