Question

cross over connections

Asked by: thebusies

I have a colleague who runs a two workstation network. The PC's are connected via a crossover cable and set up for windows file sharing.

He recently bought a new graphics card, a radion5500. What he did not realise was that he should have disabled the on-board device first. He eventually got the cards working but only after some hard work and restoring his last good restore. He had deleted some dll's whilst mucking about with the graphics card.

He could not get the crossover link to work and neither PC could see the other, in desperation he created two new network configurations, none of which have worked, these have now been deleted.

Apart from deleting the network configuration on both PC's, has anyone any idea on possible quick remedies that may work.

As this is is home PC and he works shifts I may not be able to give you a yes or no immediatlely, but as this is a work colleague and he's doing my head in with questions any advice / solutions would be welcome. I am so desperate for some relief I am offering 125 points

many Thanks in Anticipation

Mike

First i would get a windows cd and copy the i386 fodler to the c: drive or wahtever drive you have space for it on, but it is only 500 megs or so.  Then i would get the make and model of the NICs and obtain the most recent drivers.  Remove the NIC from device manager and then scan for new hardware or just reboot the machine.  once the hardware is found, use the most recent drivers. see if that works,  if not, try removing tcip/ip from the nic properties and reinstall,  when prompted where to choose the files from, choose the i386 folder.  set up you ip settings and see if this works.

what version of windows?  If it's 2k or XP (home or pro) then open a command prompt (run cmd.exe) and issue the command:

sfc /scannow

that is the microsoft system file check utility.  there is a decent chance missing dl's would be replaced with that command (and you may need the OS install cd)

Also try removing/reinstaling the network card driver

Assuming that Windows System Restore (XP) is available, I would consider:

1) Rolling back to the day before the video card changes (on both machines), and make sure everything is good.
2) Reinstalling the video card the proper way.

Lance, that was apparently what was done to recover lost dll's. I think doing the restore has somehow corrupted the network configuration. I think the only solution is for my colleague to bite the bullet and uninstall all the network stuff including nics and then re-install and let XP take care of re-instating the crossover connections.

Thanks to all. I think the easiest solution is the first one and I will reccomend tjhat my colleague uninstalls all the network bits and starts again
