Would the fact that the XP computer's hard drive is formatted in NTFS prevent the 98 computer from seeing it?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have two computers networked through a D-Link router. One is running XP, the other 98SE. They both connect to broadband through the router without any problems, but when I try to share folders, the XP machine sees the 98SE machine but the 98SE does not see the XP machine.
I have:
- Disabled firewalls on both machines
- Made sure both machines had the same workgroup name and were spelled correctly
- Successfully pinged the XP machine from the 98SE machine
- Tried adding a password to the 98SE machine
- Shared folders on BOTH machines
- Turned on file and printer sharing on 98SE machine
but still, when I go into Network Neighborhood on the 98SE machine and click on "Workgroup" (the name of the workgroup I set up), I only see the 98SE machine and not the XP machine.
Not sure what else to do, so I came here for your assistance.
Thank you for your help.
Cheers

No because your looking at a network drive. The XP machine will handle the NTFS for the 98 machine.
Try installing the netbeui protocol and see if this helps. Should assist you with the network neighbourhood issue.

Hello schvankus,
The way the HD is formated will not have anything to do with 98 not being able to see an XP share.
You may want to consider a shareware FTP server, if the above doesn't work. see www.shareware.com or www.tucows.com. You can use IE to access the FTP site.
I believe that the issue is simply old vs. new technology. XP is backwardly compatible with Win98, but Win98 is just plain unable to communicate on the application layer to access a XP share.

I dont know if this will wokr but it did for me:
First of all make sure you have all the windows updates except service pack 2
Now in windows xp do the following:
Click start
contol panel
network connections
click set up a home or small office network
now follow the steps and choose the same workgroup that the windows 98 is on
hope this works!
Hello Netbeui was omitted from XP.
Installing it can solve the problem.
I bet you, the computers can ping eachother just fine.
Try this {

}
In this case i would say stop bothering with name resolition and just use what both machines have in common IP. Get the IP address of the Windows XP machine and go to the Windows 98 machine Start -> Run : \\IP Address (ie.. \\192.168.0.5)
and if the shares you created are not administrative shares (not ending in $) they wil show up whn you do the above. Let me know if you need me to futher explain any of this.

If you want to connect to a folder in the XP machine using your 98SE machine then simply Map a drive using My Network Places from your 98SE machine.
Now with the problem you have, ensure that the XP machine has a NetBIOS name that is less then 8 characters and there are no spaces also enable NetBIOS in both machines remember that old windows were only able to find each other by using NetBIOS .
