The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

win xp home problem accessing user restricted shared folder on win 2000

Asked by yup33 in Miscellaneous Networking

Tags: xp

On the network there is a win 2000 pro machine and multiple win xp home machines. I have a shared folder on win 2000 machine. I have all the win xp users created on the win 2000 machine. I want to be able to restrict access to specific machines/users to specific folders.

So from win xp say there are 3 machines/users A, B, C. And say on win 2000 i have a user group called AB and i want to only let the AB users access specific shared folder SHARED. If i set the SHARED share permissions on win 2000 adding the AB group and removing the Everyone group I should be able to access the SHARED folder from computer A and B, but not C.

However i am no longer able to access the SHARED folder from any computer. I get an error saying I do not have the correct access permissions (access denied). When the Everyone group is added back to the share permissions i can access the folder, however that gives access to C whom i would like to restrict.

Is this possible to do from win xp home to win 2000? It seems that the username/password from the win xp machines isnt correctly passed to the win 2000 machine, is this correct? Or is it a case that because of simple file sharing on win xp it cannot access a user restricted folder on win 2000? Are there any fixes or work arounds to make win xp home user same as win xp pro user?

I'm hoping someones run across this before.

Thanks.
