The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot network 2 XP Home PCs over a crossover cable

Hi all, I am having extreme difficulty doing this. I’ll explain the situation:

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Home with SP2. I am using a 30 metre long crossover cable to connect the 2, rather than a router. Both computers have an internet connection EACH, so both have 2 network cards each (one for the PPPoE broadband connection, and one for the network connection to the other PC).

Following advice on other forums I’ve found on the net, I have assigned an IP address on each PC. One has the IP of 192.168.0.1, the other 192.168.0.2. Both have subnet masks of 255.255.255.0. I cannot ping from either of them to the other PC. Both computers have unique names, but the same workgroup name (the default, MSHOME).

I have tried (but since reversed the settings) disabling the Windows XP firewall on both PCs on the network card that carries the connection to the other PC. At the same time, I also then enabled the guest accounts on both PCs and enabled a password for the administrator accounts on both PCs. I used the same password for both PCs.

So far, I have still not being able to share files and folders on either PC, but I know the cable is not faulty as assigning the same IP address on both PCs causes notifications on both to show up. This is also the second crossover cable that I have put in place, thinking the first one was faulty.

Also, as both PCs have their own standalone Internet connections, what steps should I take in the Network Setup Wizard? I have tried a few different variations to no avail. Or should I forget using the Wizard?

I feel I’m running out of options. How many more settings could be incorrectly set up? I’m also a bit of a novice with setting up a network connection (DNS, DHCP etc. I don’t have a clue on their role in networks). Any help would be greatly appreciated! :-)
