On the Server if Active Directory is already setup and the User is already created you shouldn't have to do anything else.

On the client:

1. Right click on "My Computer" and click on "Properties"
2. Next click on the "Computer Name" tab and click the "Change..." button
3. Type in the computer name in the "Computer Name:" box (it can't be the same name as any other computer in the domain)
4. Where it says "Member Of:" click in the "Domain" radio button and type the name of the Domain you setup in Active Directory (the name of the domain you want to join)
5. Click "OK" and you will be prompted for the username and password of a user authorized to join that domain.
6. Type in the user name and password of a user you setup in active directory on the server and click "OK"
7. Reboot the PC and login make sure at the logon box where it says "Log On To:" that the name of the domain appears in that box
8. Type in user name and password of the active directory user you wish to login as and choose your domain from the "Log On To:" box and click "OK"

Good luck!

You needn't do anything in active directory.  After you follow Steve's directions you are all set.

Sure .. I need to add user or computer on the Active Dir ... but i want to know the steps to do it..

by: NYtechGuyPosted on 2006-07-31 at 09:44:53ID: 17217091

Omar-

You misunderstand me:  You only need to follow the numbered steps above, and then you are done.  You don't have to logon to the server and do anything in the Active Directory console - the only steps you need to perform are on the PC itself.

Thanks,

Justin

yall are talking about two different things..  in your original question you asked how to add a PC to a domain, which you were giving instructions for.  Now you are asking how to add a USER to a domain.  These are two totally differen things.

to add a user, go into Active directory users and computers, rightclick on the OU you want the user to be in, choose add user.  thats it.

On the server go to "Start", then "Control Panel" and go to "Administrative Tools" then double click "Active Directory Users and Computers"

In the box that comes up you will see a left hand pane with your domain name in it and a list of folders underneath.

One of these folders will be "Users" click on that folder and the users in the domain will appear in the right hand pane.

Right click in an empty portion of the right hand pane and on the menu that appears click "New" and then click "User"

Enter the users information (full name, login name, password, etc.) and click "OK"

The user should now appear in the list of Active Directory users, if not try refreshing the list.

Now follow the steps in my previous post and use the username and password you just created to login to the domain.

Hopefully this explanation was more along the lines of what you were looking for.

Good luck!

Correction to my previous post:

On the server go to "Start", then "SETTINGS", then "Control Panel" and then double click "administrative tools" and then double click "Active directory users and computers"

..Follow the rest of the procedure as listed in my previous post.

Stevepo.  what you are calling 'folders' in ADUC are actually OUs (Organizational Units).

by: Danny_LarouchePosted on 2006-07-31 at 13:58:43ID: 17219163

You should simply ask the  network administrator to do it!! There is no need to add users to join the domain. The computer will use its "computer account" created transparently.

Not exactly relevant to the question, but --

Mike ---

Stevepo was OK calling it a folder.  Not all containers in the directory are OUs -- in particular, the one that Steve mentioned ("Users") is not an OU.
