Question

Can't ping a XP pro workstation on Windows Network

Asked by: jvanderw

I have about 50 Windows XP pro clients (sp2) on my LAN. My domain controllers (primary and alternate) are both Windows 2003 Server.  I can not ping about 10 workstations. Most of the machines I do not have static IP addresses.  It does not matter if I try using the hostname or the ip address.

Pinging mx-nj-base3.musicexpress.local [192.168.22.199] with 32 bytes of data:
 Request timed out.
 Request timed out.
 Request timed out.
 Request timed out.
 Ping statistics for 192.168.22.199:     Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Results are the same if I use the IP address;

Any ideas where I might check. Is this a firewall setting on the client, a switch problem... ?

Thanks. -John

ok the name resolution is working so not a problem by name.... It may be a switch problem.  The only way it would be a firewall problem (local machine firewall) is if you are traversing networks things on the same local segment should respond to a ping so anything on 192.168.22.x should respond when queried from 192.168.22.x if it is different than that, then you will have local firewalls preventing it on machines.

Thanks
scott

you should check the clients to make sure they are turned on, and have the correct ip.

windows xpsp2 has the integrated Firewall. Usually this firewall is disable when you join domain, but you should have a check to see if it is turned off.

Remember to check the DNS server to make sure it has the correct records for the clients. try to clear its cache, update server data files....in DNS mmc

at those clients, type ipconfig/all to get their ip, then ping these value from another machine.

If you can get any other services like the internet, you may want to check Windows XP's firewall setting.  Somehow maybe thru patching, this may have been enabled.

Go to START > Control Panel > Network Connections > your active NIC > Properties > Advance > Windows Firewall > Settings >* Advance, choose "Allow Incoming ECHO Request".  Click OK, OK, OK, etc until you are back at the desktop

*Note in the General Tab radio button for Firewall is ON by default.

Check the windows firewall settings to make sure they are off, unless of course you already have a domain policy turning this off. I would just double check to make sure this is turned off though.

Hi,

What type of switches are they connected to?  Are all of the hosts in the same VLAN?  Do they all have a default gateway set?  Can you ping them from the router?  Can you confirm if the addresses are DHCP or static?

Cheers

nttranbao > you should check the clients to make sure they are turned on, and have the correct ip.

:-)    Agree. Sometimes we can neglect what was obvious

> windows xpsp2 has the integrated Firewall. Usually this firewall is disable when you join domain,

There's my best guess, is that some upgrade has run interference on you, such that its behaviour was different from one machine to the next. Your ratio is similar to ours for number of machines that ended up with firewall enabled after upgrading them to SP2.

per MS:

"In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Firewall is turned on by default. (However, some computer manufacturers and network administrators might turn it off.) You do not have to use Windows Firewall—you can install and run any firewall that you choose. Evaluate the features of other firewalls and then decide which firewall best meets your needs. If you choose to install and run another firewall, turn off Windows Firewall."
