You have to put the users in the Remote Users Group

The VPN is setup on an external modem does your comment  still apply

yeah, the modem dials into your server, then you are authenticated via the server, however I believe all remote users have to be in the remote users Group. or Dialin Group, cant remember off hand.

If you can get a logon box, but not get authorization it may be that the domain name is not being associated with the user name. Try for a user name using:
DomainName\UserName
or
UserName@DomainName.abc

Hey Jeddd,

Two questions... are you trying to connect to a local computer on the domain or are you trying to connect directly to a server?

In most cases when you use a VPN connection into a local domain, you most often just need to know the ip address of the local machine or server in question.
Once you have this, use the ip address of the local machine as the "computer" on the remote tab. Also make sure that if you have the windows or any other firewall installed on the local machine that it forwards the tcp port 3389. Otherwise you will get an error message when trying to connect to the computer in the remote session. Also make sure also that you have a remote user assigned on the local machine.

This is a good primer: http://jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051122_how_to_use_remote_desktop_connection_rdc.html

Cheers mate!

For Users:
You need to to allow VPN access under the Dial-in Tab of the properties of the user in active directory...

For PC:
The PC itself that you are using needs to have Remote Desktop enabled...

Right mouse click the my computer icon, left mouse click properties. Left mouce click the Remote tab... Check allow users to connect remotely to the computer... Add the users you want.

I am trying to log on to the domain itself as if the user was in the office
The required users are in the remote user group and I have allowed access as you suggested still cant log in
I can see the server and all the files

Is the computer a member of the domain? If not did you try entering the user name as DomainName\UserName or UserName@DomainName.abc

by: jeddddPosted on 2006-08-15 at 23:26:21ID: 17323995

I have setup the domain settings in My Computer/Properties/Computername and tried entering the various name options but I get the domain cannot be found
I can use remote desktop to gain full access to the server as described by jtarkenton but still can't join the domain remotley I have setup all of the access permissions for dial in ect Is it possible to actually join a domain over a VPN or is Remote Desktop as good as it gets

by: RobWillPosted on 2006-08-16 at 07:38:58ID: 17326584

You cannot join a domain over a remote desktop connection, but you should be able to do so if you have a working VPN connection.
Connect the VPN tunnel, and then when trying to join you say "I can get a login box to come up but none of the logins work", try using for the user name  Your DomainName\YourUserName  such as  mydomain\jdoe  or mydomain.com\jdoe
If that fails, try adding the domain controllers IP, to the DNS servers listed under TCP/IP properties of the network adapter of the PC that is trying to join the domain. Make it the first/primary DNS server.

Jeddd,

Look at this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303503

This will probably be your only bet over a remote connection.

Good luck!

That article will only apply if ISA server is installed. Is it?

by: jeddddPosted on 2006-08-16 at 14:02:48ID: 17329667

I have added the IP address of the domain name server to the DNS list and I can log on to the domain so I will accept RobWills answer however I have another question that arises from this I will post this seperatley

Thanks All

Jedddd
