Open up file sharing on your systems and share a folder. Not the smartest thing to be doing for security reasons though. As long as your on the same LAN then you should be fine.

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 07:23:39ID: 17676601

I tried sharing but when i come and try to check it on another computer I dont see the computer as well as its shared file and folders.

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 07:25:32ID: 17676612

try going to start, run and typing \\computername\share

Also turn off the firewalls on the machines doing the file sharing

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 07:35:22ID: 17676700

when i typed in , its said that "The network path was not found".

Are your systems on the same LAN connection?

I am a newbie and not an expert on networking. So, the first thing is I got replies from only one out of two while pinging on to their ip address.

by: paradoxenginePosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:13:20ID: 17677603

Active firewalls, on one side or the other?
Can you tryp to do the start / run // \\Ip on the machine answering the ping?

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:16:00ID: 17677629

Yes tried with the firewall active and again with firewalls setting to disabled. Its just the same. I can access only on one of the computers.

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:41:21ID: 17677930

can you ping all the systems?

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:42:29ID: 17677952

Not all. I get request time out on some and get reply from one.

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:44:13ID: 17677998

On the systems that you don't get a reply from, make sure their firewall is turned off and you do have file and print sharing checked on the interface that's getting the IP, (wireless I assume)

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:48:16ID: 17678073

Where shoud i check for the file and print sharing interface

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:52:13ID: 17678191

Right click on My Network Places and goto Properties, then when your in Network Connections, Right click on the Wireless Connection and click on Properties, you will see a few boxes and one will have File and Print Sharing. Make sure that is checked and also make sure that your Firewall is DISABLED.

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 09:58:38ID: 17678247

Yes done that. Now where can i go to view the shared items on my pc.

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 10:02:35ID: 17678281

Double Click on My Computer and you will see your drives, if you want to share your entire C drive then right click on it and click on Sharing and Security. From there you set your shares. If you don't want to share your entire drive then go into your C drive and find the folder you want to share and do the same thing.

by: scoinzenPosted on 2006-10-06 at 10:19:46ID: 17678401

Ok, after that. In order to view the shared drive of another computer on my computer, where must i go. And after that how can i make my connection secure, whilst sharing the files and folders at the same time

by: jpkleinsPosted on 2006-10-06 at 10:22:46ID: 17678425

in order to see the other shares on another computer, on your computer, goto start, RUN, and type \\computername  and then you should see the shares available on that computer. As far as making your shares secure, you either give them Read only permissions or Full permissions on the shares when you create them under the Permissions tab. By default it's Everyone and you can't change that because your not on a domain.

There is no difference between setting up a file and printer sharing in a wired or wireless network. You configure it the same way. If you a have Windows workgroup, then you have to be in same IP network, have the same workgroup name, and your need setup file and printering sharing.

When the file and printer sharing does not work, it is often because of firewalls. Windows XP SP2 comes with its own Windows firewall. In addition to the many other firewall software that PC manufacturers will pre-install on to you new PC or laptop.

I have got every computers networked and shared file and printing on all of them. On one of the computers I have connected a printer and from my computer I tried to print a document. When i went to the print option and under find printer, it showed me the message "the directory service is currently unavailable", and was unable to access the printer. Any suggestions.

all computers must be members of the same workgroup, default is either "mshome" or "workgroup"
right click - My Computer - click Prop's - click Computer Name tab - click Change button - select Workgroup - enter Workgroup name like "theden" - click ok

all computers should have netbios over tcp enabled
right click network icon in systray by time (or control panel - network connections - local area connection) - click status - click properties button - scroll down in the box & select tcp/ip - click properties button - click advanced button - click wins tab - select enable netbios over tcp/ip - click ok all the way out (last one click close)
