The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Implementing HSRP

Hi

ISP --- 2503 --- PIX 506E --- 3550 L3 Switch --- bunch of 2950's --- users/servers/guests

At the moment, we have a Cisco 2503 router that provides internet connection to our office. This in turn is connected to our Cisco PIX 506E firewall. The 2503 contains a BRI interface to kick in an ISDN connection should our leased line go down.

I'm thinking this is not enough. The ISDN link will be slow compared to the 2Meg line we are using, and this may create problems for the users.

So, I'm thinking along the lines of implementing HSRP. The only possible issue is that we are implementing a VLAN solution. There will be 3 VLAN's; VLAN1 for the clients which has a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 (the VLAN1 address of our 3550 switch), VLAN2 is an isolated VLAN whose DG is the 192.168.2.1 interface of the PIX, and VLAN3 is the server VLAN whose DG is 192.168.3.1 on the 3550 (VLAN3 address on the 3550). The 3550 has a default route pointing to the 192.168.1.254 interface on the PIX, and there is intervlan routing between VLAN1 and VLAN3 on the PIX. VLAN2 is isolated.

The above was configured as we wanted 3 VLANs, but the PIX 506e can only handle two logical interfaces, therefore VLAN3 uses VLAN1 for internet access. I hope it makes sense.

Anyway, back to HSRP. The only device that uses the 2503 router as a default gateway is the PIX. Despite the slightly complicated solution described above, this shouldn't affect a possible implementation of HSRP should it?
