Browse All TopicsHello,
We are using a CISCO PIX firewall and clients are able to VPN into our network using Cisco VPN client software. My manager has asked me if it is possible to use standard Windows VPN software instead of the Cisco VPN client to VPN into the network. I don't know the answer - I was wondering if anyone on here will know the answer, and if it is possible, is it difficult to configure? I assume the clients are running Windows XP.
Thanks very much,
Wanda

MS PPTP is easier to configure than using the cisco client, but the PPTP client does not do the split tunneling (i know it is technically possible, but not easy to roll out to end users) and also The pix will not allow you to connect and then browse the web 'through' the pix as you will probably only be using 1 interface. Our clients use the PPTP for maintenance of servers but not as a general solution.

You would have to either
1) Configure the Cisco router to accept PPTP connections and set up a local user account on the Cisco router.
OR
2) Configure a Windows 2000 or 2003 server with RRAS and set it up as a VPN gateway and set your Cisco router to forward all PPTP connections through to the server.
