With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not?   • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Cant connect to Wireless ROuter/Modem via ethernet switch

I have had a new office built at home into which I have 6 RJ45 network ports wired back to an ethernet switch. The switch is then wired into one of the RJ45 ports ine the back of my ADSL wireless Modem/Router.

My devices connect fine to the switch. The lights at both NIC and switch indicate there is comms between the two.

When I make a wireless connection to the router all is well.
I have an external Network Storage Device directly connected to the router. It is working fine too.

However for the devices wired into the switch, the router is not being seen (I cant ping it) and the DCHP server isnt assigning an IP address.

Status lights show that the connection between router and switch is OK.

So the config is:

Router <--------> switch <----------> Device (say an XP machine for simplicity but in fact there are 3 XP boxes a mac and a SUN Unltra5 running UNIX)

Why cant the device see the router?

When the PC connects to the switch it says the ip address is 169.254.225.179 with subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and it says Automatic Private Address.

I guess I need to somehow get past this in order to get an ip address assigned by the modem/router do I? But how!!

Or am I going about things in the wrong way?
